    Hi there,

I am looking for alternatives to avoid future frustration($$$ and crappy hbo movie/800 channels to plow thru for nadda, with my Verizon service. I would like to get basis limited local channels, and choose educational interesting programs/movies to view and not use Verizon service...we have some technical experience, and would appreciate any success stories or advice that you may have to share. thanks.

Internet from Comcast, Over the Air Antenna for local channels and maybe SlingTV for a subset of cable channels.

Internet is the hardest part since you really only have two choices, Verizon or Comcast.

We cut the cord years ago and watch using a TV antenna. Fantastic picture (better than cable or FIOS).

Lots of channels, including some that show what are probably now considered oldies MASH, Kojak, etc.

For internet I think we are on FIOS 25M for $50/month.

If your looking for alternative internet access, FIOS is really the best option. Yes, you could downgrade to the lowest tier of TV services, but Verizon has committees dedicated to making you pay for things that are utterly unnecessary. Comcast has horribad TV and Internet, and Wireless is not competitive.

Sadly, as technology overhead has become cheaper, so has the profiteering that the Telcos/Cable companies use. And they have been at this for decades.

Bottom line - if you have Fios, figure out how to make it work. Over The Air TV in this area is excellent, but the reality is you will pay more for less.

My Fios internet is awful. Truly awful. I'm ok with the TV and phone but am afraid I'm going to have to defect to the evil comcast if I can't get speeds over 2.5 when its supposed to be 25 (have called many times). I do see some mini dish internet providers popping up in the neighborhood - I doubt they're cheap but if you had good internet you could cut cable and use a digital antenna plus subscription service for the educational programming

Then you have an issue... either local or something

The only performance issue I've seen with fios is the never ending fight between Verizon and google about YouTube at peak times.
