I agree that all signs should be legally placed.
The issue of political signs has been challenged all the way to the Commonwealth Attorney General. He determined that political signs on private property are part of "free speech" and you cannot stop it. HOAs do have the authority to put reasonable restrictions on them, but cannot ban them outright.

I don't get political signs anyways... do people actually make up their mind based on the size/number of signs they see? I guess it might work, just like internet ads, but it's an eyesore.

Besides, I only vote for sane candidates, like Eugene Delgaudio. 8)

Agree. The problem is many voters haven't a clue what the candidates are running on (or don't care) or just don't know an election is coming up until they see the signs...

Tongue firmly planted in cheek: Damn this experiment called Democracy!!! When you look at country's with leaders who win with overwhelming majorities, they don't put up yard signs. For example: Putin, Stalin, Mao....
Now putting on my flame retardant suit. :flame::angryfire: Points will be given for originality.

If I was responding to me, I could go with righteous indignation or an ad hominem argument:
"How dare you imply that I am supportive of despotic governments!"

Bonus points, WITHOUT GOOGLING, Binging, or searching, who was the original artist of this song?:

    "Sign sign everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery break'in my mind"

I abhor this time of year.. political signs, people knocking on my door, filling my mailbox and jamming crap into my door jamb, radio and tv attack ads. None of these things affect my own personal research on the candidates. Waste of time and paper. UGH!

I went to the county today and reviewed the permits for political signs I have seen around our area. Below is a list of candidates that have NOT received a county permit for their signs. There is also a list of candidates that do have permits, but the permit only allows signs up to 4 sq feet. Those listed are violating their existing permit. I suggest you contact both the county zoning enforcement as well as each candidate to voice your concern.

    Meyer
    Buona
    Plowman
    King

The following candidates do have permits, but are exceeding the size requirement:

    York
    Chapman

The only candidates WITH permits on file for the county are (complete list):

    Buffington
    York
    Chapman
    Simpson
    Ohneiser
    Higgins
    Clemens
    Jimmerson
    Zurn
    Delguadio

Each sign must be less than 4sq ft, on private property, and 5 ft from the VDOT right of way.

    Jim-
The county does not issue permits for signs larger than 4 square feet, but the County Attorney has said the county has no enforcement mechanism for signs larger than that.
Therefore, the county cannot permit them, but has no ability to deny them.

It was Cuccinelli that made the statement you are referring to:

    http://ag.virginia.gov/Opinions and Legal Resources/Opinions/2012opns/12-043 Ramadan.pdf

It basically states that the county cannot impose greater restrictions than those in place for other temporary signs simpy because they are a political sign. The maximum temporary sign allowed by county ordinance is 20 sq ft.

The county attorney has the opinion that because it is a political sign, and there is no specific ordinance in place that addresses this issue, then zoning can provide a permit, and hence cannot enforce it. Of course this opinion is not documented. It is basically a loophole. I would contact my local supervisor, but we don't seem to have one right now !
