I saw a sign yesterday that says that Ashburn Recreation Center is coming to a location off Truro Parish Drive. Does anyone have anymore information about this? Is this a county thing or an HOA thing? Sounds like a county thing. Thanks!!

It's a county thing. The funding is in the county CIP split between the next 2 years.

Interestingly, the county plans to buy several private homes for mental Heath and substance abuse clients in the Mooreview center area and they say they will offer Services including "intensive psychotherapy, psychiatric and nursing care, medication management..."

I wonder if this is wise considering this area is very family intensive here and I can't help but wonder what kind of psychiatric or psychotherapic or drug problems these clients will have and whether they have any propency of violence or have had problems involving kids or something along those lines. Will drug gangs go around here to look for these people who may have ratted them out or to try to get them back on drugs? Will this have an impact on our residential home values? Just wondering is all. I'm not only concerned about the impact on my own kids but that of others too as there is always the risk of them leaving the property and having issues. I say never say never.

The psychiatric conditions and drug addicts are already here.

Just pray the county doesn't buy the homes next to yours which they can do.....then you'll have to put up living next to them for as long as the county wants those homes for those people.

Where is Mooreview Center? Or, is it Moorefield?

Generally, placement of this type of facility needs to be accessible (think Metro/Buses) or within walking distance from affordable housing, if available, and if it's a walk-in center as opposed to a 'live-in' rehab facility. It's totally impractical in a residential community.

Having said that...I do not consider this area very residential anymore. We are sandwiched between highways, surrounded by shopping centers and office buildings, local streets boast high speed limits, etc. etc. Eventually, (Broadlands) will blend in with every other community/city, IMO.

I work in the field and the mentally ill and those struggling with addiction are already surrounding you. Many who are not getting proper treatment because resource to treats are scarce for them everywhere.

So I know construction won't be complete until 2019/2020, but does anyone know if NCAP or SNOW plans to relocate their operations to this new pool from Claude Moore, or possibly open a new satellite club/location at this site? Would be nice to avoid battling Waxpool to get the kids to practice.

I like how the put up a sign and list a link the loudoun county parks and recreation website, but there is no information there. As far as I can tell from my search's there is no information out on the web about this "Recreation" center!

Things are getting serious. Today I saw 3 people 20 feet from our backyard surveying and putting up markers. They are planning to use 18 acres of land along Belmont Ridge and Truro Parish - it looks like it will obliterate all of the woods currently left along Belmont Ridge/Truro Parish between Broadlands Blvd and Truro Parish on the west side. I found a link to the county's drawing here: https://www.loudoun.gov/documentcenter/view/118115 . It looks like it may be the end of the whole nature preserve concept in this part of Broadlands. The red is the area for the new community center. We have community centers in Broadlands, Brambleton and Ashburn Farms. A serious waste of tax dollars and a detriment to our community.

The folks who don't live nearby will sing its praises, but the adjacent houses will lose that nice buffer of woods that offered some privacy and noise abatement. The development on the eastern edge of the county has (imo) been reckless.

The development of this site as a county recreation facility has been planned since the inception of Broadlands, long before most of the woods were obliterated to build the homes we live in (and believe me....that obliteration was a fascinating process to watch!). The county, thus far, has chosen not to spend the money to construct it. This will not be a small community center like the ones that we have in Broadlands. It will be a larger facility similar to the Claude Moore facility in Sterling.

I'm not sure the families with Briar Woods, Rock Ridge, and Stone Bridge swimmers--who practice from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Claude Moore due to a significant shortage of pool space in the area--would agree with you.

The adjacent properties stand to lose $30,000-40,000 in market value due to the following factors:
    1. Loss of surrounding natural wooded habitat
    2. Additional traffic
    3. Additional noise
    4. Loss of privacy

Can some type of privacy barrier be put in place?

2Many -- How did you determine that loss of market value? When LoCo assesses property do they take into account the 4 factors you outline, I am not familiar with the assessment process.

I did a quick search of the Loudoun mapping department website and it shows the parcel as having been bought by Loudoun County in 1999. This land has always been slated for a large recreation facility and I remember voting for it once before about 10 + years I think -- the first vote for Bond money failed. This should not be a surprise.

I think the privacy barrier is a legitimate question and it depends on who pays. You can put any type of barrier on your property that the HOA will approve. You and your neighbors should also engage with our member of the Board of Supervisors (that constituent service thing) to see about a barrier and if one is not there you can basically lobby for it before construction is finalized. I live in Broadlands, but not next to the rec center. Eventhough paying for the barrier would be using county resources, my tax dollars and would not benefit me directly, I would support it if you need another voice.

    - Most of the natural wooded habitat is already gone in eastern Loudoun
    - Traffic will be minimal impact except for events. Been to Claude Moore many a time and NEVER had an issue with traffic
    - Noise? Most everything will take place inside the facility
    - Privacy? I would worry more about the neighbors with most homes 10-20 yards apart. ;)

I think light pollution could be a serious consideration.

As for a barrier, I sit on the Modifications Sub-Committee and personally, would not approve anything significant on a homeowners property. Landscaping does not require approval.
If the county builds a barrier on their property, good luck!

Interesting response from someone who sits on the Modifications Sub-Committee. Since "most of the natural wooded habitat is already gone in eastern Loudoun," seems like one of the reasons we paid more to have property adjacent to the wooded area, and not a reason to finish it off. A couple of folks have mentioned that it "was always the plan." Why was there only a sign posted this past Spring? The sign for the "Future Home of George Mason" has been posted for years, and therefore, not a surprise to people who may have purchased their home in the last 10 years. Traffic is so minimal at Claude Moore that they had to put a light in to manage it. Noise comes traffic, people and recreational activities. Many of the homes adjacent to this property have more space between homes, and privacy is an issue. I thought the HOA was suppose to advocate to help maintain the value of homes, but it seems that is not the case here. Very disappointing.
