Meh,,, I just hope they have self checkout. Getting in/out quickly is the primary objective when shopping in a second tier supermarket.

Aldi has fantastic prices especially when items are on sale. Happy to have a store closer than Sterling or Chantilly. This week, a gallon of skim milk is $1.59. A dozen eggs were on sale for $.59 the other week. They also have a decent selection of organic products at a very good price as compared to other organic products in nearby grocery stores. Also, although their produce is limited, they are fresh.

Just got back from visiting the Aldi in Sterling - Just what we needed is another crappy grocery store. The only name-brand merchandise in the whole place in Pop-Tarts. Everything else is their own brand. No wonder they have such cheap prices, all they sell is garbage. You even have to deposit a quarter to unlock a shopping cart! Of course you get it back at the end of your shopping, but still... Go check it out in Sterling.

So, I haven't been to an Aldi, but I have a few questions. Sounds like this was also your first visit to an Aldi.
It seems you have made the determination that it is "crappy" and all they sell is "garbage" because they sell their own brand and not name brands. I am aware that every chain grocery store, including the next-to-godliness Wegman's, has their own brands. I, for one, often will buy store name brands because I find them to be just as good as name brands and at a lower price. Or have you sampled a large portion of their brands and find them to be inferior?

So, if people have to pay a refundable deposit to get a grocery cart, I wonder if that means there will be less of them in the parking lot blocking parking spaces and fewer rolling into cars when it's windy? Interesting concept....

Aldi uses private labeling as a way of providing cost savings to the consumer. So, the Millville Rice Squares sold at Aldi... is actually Chex. My niece has food allergies and my sister went to Aldi's to check out their gluten free products. Many gluten free items sold at Aldi's have the exact same ingredients as the pricey products she has bought for years... at a lower cost. Having to pay a quarter to use a cart, doesn't make the employees clean up the parking lot from those who are inconsiderate and don't put it back into the cart corral (Pet peeve of mine. Don't be lazy people...). As vacliff touched on, random carts left in the parking lot becomes a hazard. You get your quarter back if you do the right thing. The store is small and so is the variety of products offered, but the fruits/vegetables are fresh and so is the meat. It's not the main store that I shop at, but I like it for the inexpensive staples that we go through quickly every week like milk, eggs and greek yogurt, as well as the items that are on sale for the week. If you prefer a fancy storefront with fancy labels, don't like to put your cart back or bag your own stuff, then Aldi's is not for you.

I'm interested to see what Lidl will be like, another German based store.

We love Aldi in Sterling. After you get tired of the crappy produce and over priced meat at HT, it's a welcome alternative (always exceptions of course). There might be a bit of bias since we've spent time in Germany. The wife is more excited about the Lidl; I guess it's a bit more upscale. But, yeah, as was mentioned, If you're higher maintenance, then fortunately there are other options available.

I would never accuse Pop Tarts as being garbage. I do apologize about your traumatic experience and hope you're feeling better. SMH

Does anyone know the opening dates for Aldi and Lidl? Went to an Aldi last week for the first time in Annandale and I thought it was a great alternative to what we have for grocery stores in this area. Certainly no frills, but what appeared to be quality generic products at great prices. A surprising variety of things in a small space from food to pet products to kids toys to camping gear to fans to umbrellas, etc.. I hope the people in this area give both a chance as they could be great competition for HT and other stores that charge much more.
