Last week a resident snapped this photo of a couple young lads walking out on the ice on Bullfrog Pond (behind Small Branch/Hidden Pond). The very cold temps always make this an issue in the winter - but we never maintain cold enough temps to make this safe. That is why there are signs posted with "no skating" - the message is clear.

Please, if you recognize either of these boys, tell the parents - so they can have a serious talk about the risks the boys are taking for a bit of perceived fun. (Please do NOT identify the boys in this open forum.)

And thank you to the alert neighbors.

For those of you that have not been here for awhile, two young girls ALMOST DIED on Bullfrog Pond. They broke through the ice. The only reason they are alive today is at that exact time, a resident was looking out of his kitchen window and saw them break through. He was able to slide out on the ice, reach down through the hole and pull them out.
If he wasn't looking at that exact instant, it is doubtful they would have survived.

I remember that day.... a narrowly avoided tragedy.

I understand these boys have been identified and parents notified - but serves as a good reminder to talk to your kids about the dangers of these ponds in winter.

Who owns the pond? Perhaps puitting a fence around it may suffice? Im just wondering out aloud here....if that could be done?

But any rate, Im glad that the boys didn't break through the ice...they are very lucky and so are their parents...I can't imagine the trauma they could have gone through if something tragic happened.
