What Tree Is This?

We bought a Leyland Cypress today thinking it was the same as our existing tree but after getting it home, realized it is not!

Anyone know what tree this is?

Does this look like what you have? It looked similar to me and I think it is what is called a Thuja Green Giant, a type of Arborvitae. If so, you have a fast growing evergreen, much faster than the cypress. They can get to about 30 feet tall, and I think they look great. I planted a row of them as a natural barrier and they are around 20-30 feet tall now.

 

That's definitely an arborvitae. Very fast growing, much less attractive than a Leland cypress in my opinion. They seem very common in Broadlands, so I assume the builder used them pretty heavily.

 

We have three arborvitae, over two stories high now. Like them a lot. They deal well with shade (one is middle of the north side of the house).

Sometimes deer nibble them across Belmont Ridge in that development - that look like an apple core. We've never had that issue for some reason even though deer come through.

Leland get quite wide, make sure you are out far enough. Costco has great plants.

 

I was thinking it was the arborvitae but the close up of the leaf picture didn't match mine.

 

Yeah, I was definitely not expecting the Leland to get as wide, should have done more research prior to purchasing!
