I ended up putting my existing router on my second floor to use it as a Access Point- getting consistently 300Mbps up and down over WIFI all day long

What are the specs on your NIC card and WIFI Network Adapter?

    Here are mine -
WIFI - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/89450/intel-dual-band-wireless-ac-3165.html - getting near 300Mbps consistently all day
    VZ-TEST-WIFI.JPG

    LAN - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/82186/intel-ethernet-connection-i219-v.html - getting 900Mbps+ consistently all day

One last post for tonight - I was able to tweak my old iMac 2009 to get almost 300Mbps consistently by setting the MTU size on the NIC card to 1440.
I did a ping test to the gateway to see what largest MTU would get a reply and the largest I could get a reply was 1440, all other packets above 1440 would time out, which also explains the high ping times when my NIC was set to 1500 (default).

My other new machines PC and MAC all have newer NICs and WIFI adapters so they are solid

here is the site for Mac users on how to do a ping test to check the largest MTU for the interface
    http://www.hackaapl.com/mazimum-transmission-unit-mtu-frame-size-in-os-x/
just do the ping tests you don't need to do all the pico editing, you can go do the ping testing from terminal and then go to network preferences, select ethernet and click advance and then click on hardware set the MTU size after you determined the largest MTU you get when you do the ping test to your assigned gateway.

Here is is for Windows based machines - yes it refers to older version of Windows but the dos command is still the same.
    https://kb.netgear.com/19863/Ping-Test-to-determine-Optimal-MTU-Size-on-Router

After setting my MTU to 1440, I am now getting better latency and throughput on my 10 year old iMac, that still runs like a champ (knock on wood)

I also had test my iMacs wifi card with the same ping test and the largest MTU I was able to get a response back from the gateway was 1400 - am now seeing consistent 150Mbps which was previously I was only getting about 80Mpbs over WIFI on the old mac.

    1) not all speed test sites are geared towards the gig speed ranges - both the test and the capabilities of the site must be tuned for those higher speeds
    2) testing to random location isn't really indicative of what your max speed is.. its an end to end test so it matters where the other end is

testing to verizon addresses both points #1 and #2

It's certainly possible to have fast last mile to verizon.. and slow performance to random spot on the net.

Speed is a function of the whole path.. you're not magically going to be getting 100megabyte/sec downloads everywhere just because the last mile is upgraded.

The point of these higher speed last mile internet connections is to avoid congestion from multiple users on the same transit. So when the kid is playing xbox, suzie is streaming 4k Netflix, mom is on facebook, and you are doing stuff on the computer.. everyone is still getting nice fast internet.

When checking speeds using an ethernet cable, the cable 'type' is critical! If it's marked as being "Cat 5" then it will only support 100Mbps max. In order to reach higher speeds and minimize errors, you should be using cables labeled "Cat 5e" or "Cat 6". (Cat 6a also exists, but is overkill for residential usage IMHO). If you're not seeing the speeds you expect when using a cable, try a different 'certified' cable that is labeled for the higher speeds. If you have a lower grade cable anywhere in your 'path', then all speeds will be limited if the data has to travel through that cable. All cables are NOT alike!

If you ask me, anyone who has Cat 5 cables should just thrown them out and avoid using them at all. Cat 5e should be the lowest grade you use.

I had my installation yesterday-- a couple issues came up. 1) The phone porting from OpenBand was canceled due to too much time between the approval for the port and the date of the installation. This is my fault because I moved my technician appointment. OpenBand approves phone porting for a period of 48 hours only, after that amount of time lapses, you have to call Verizon and have them request another re-port. But, I think we got it sorted out by the end of the evening, and a big thanks to OpenBand for taking my call, and staying aware of the issue, and expediting completing the number port. 2) The speed testing. I have been seeing the posts that others are concerned they aren't getting the crazy fast speeds across the internet. What I discovered-- wi-fi max speed is about 300 mbps, no matter the device. If you are connecting your wifi device to the Quantum router, and you have a max capacity wifi adaptor on the device, you can expect to see 300 mbps, max. Also, the NIC card in my computer that I bought back in 2010 is only getting LAN speeds below 100 mbps/up and down. I might go buy a new device, but I haven't decided yet. I do believe what others have posted about the "last mile" speed, and the Verizon speed test has two tests. The first is the device test, that measures your speed between your device and some random point on the internet. The second Verizon test measures the speed between your FiOS router and within their network. When I run that test, I always see gigabit numbers. What I believe the gigabit product to really be is a high capacity system built to connect dozens (even a hundred) device in your home (think Internet of things) across the network and handle it all. I do think I'll see random extreme speed bursts, which will be cool if I download big software updates on our XBox 1, but overall, the internet seems quite good.

What's most impressive to me is the television/video. I opted for two set top boxes and was not disappointed. I have the most expensive channel line-up, and I see great value, because I get Starz, Showtime, Epix, and the Movie Channel all included. I don't need to stream Starz anymore. Also, the video remote has voice activation, so I can say "ABC" and it goes to Channel 7. Cool.

I did ask about "cable cards" and the tech did tell me they were available, and you can use these if you have say, a TIVO device.

voice remotes.. what's the cable box look like that verizon is putting in?

I'm still suffering with what I believe are poor generation multi-room DVRs in my stepup, but I don't want to pay the higher fee for enhanced dvr

FYI is you have directv and you are switching to FIOS TV look at your directv billing cycle first before scheduling an install date for verizon. Last week i found out that Directv(At&T forced this) will no longer reimburse customers if they cancel their service once the billing cycle has already started. So lets say your monthly billing starts on the 1st and you cancel on the 2nd you will be billed for the full month.

Thanks, that's helpful. So do you have other wired connections to your gigabit router in the cabinet? Just curious to see if Verizon serves up an IP to that device or if there is some "magic sauce" in their router. Sounds like it doesn't.

I have all the wires from the patch panel plugged directly into my non-Verizon router. Then several devices throughout the house plugged into the wall outlets connected to the router via the patch panel. I believe the only time you'd be required to use the Verizon provided router would be if you were trying to connect directly via coax, but I don't think Verizon sets up any new installations that way. Also, an update on speed - when using the Verizon speed test page, i'm seeing gigabit speeds at the router, so all is well now.

Edit: I'm an internet only subscriber - no TV or Phone!

DSL reports has an extensive FAQ/Wiki on this topic.

The TL : DR is basically there is a DHCP lease from the ONT to your first device.. and that is the IP that verizon limits your connection to. You can release it and assign the IP to something else. It's not magic there except for managing the DHCP lease.

The router is significant because it acts as the MOCA adaptor to put the IP info over the coax to the settop boxes. If not setup correctly, guides, On-demand, and callID info will not work properly. The DSL reports page goes through all the different iterations of how you can connect the devices and what you lose or not in each config.

    See 3.1 networking - http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios

Dude, it is 2019, who still uses set-top boxes and landlines? :)

Everyone using Verizon for video :)

I just put my router behind the verizon one and live with double NAT. It has not impacted me for anything except wanting plex streaming from remote.. and that was solvable using port forwarding and some static reservations. I don't use the verizon wifi.. but I also don't pay for the router so I don't mind either way. I am still a coax connection tho. All new installs should be ethernet.. especially for gigabit installs.

Yeah, we'll just be using them for Internet, so no coax involved. Thanks!
