We just had our Fios installed. Very nice tech and took about an hour and a half. Phone porting and all went smoothly. Very happy. Testing everything out now and seeing pretty good speeds. Just curious what others are getting. I tried two sites

    Good ol speedtest.net
    speedtest.png

and fast.com which is basically a netflix network test to see how well you get access to their content

This is wired to the fios router using a patch cable to my gigabit switch then patch cabled to the original house wiring to my office. All over cat5e I believe.

    This is good performance.

I just bought a new HP all in one computer with gigabit NIC and get almost exactly the same, and I have similar wiring.

Did you buy your own switch for the patch panel?

Yes, back in 2016 I upgraded the openband 100mb switch to this Gigabit one

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EVGIYG

If you still have the openband switch this one has been flawless since I installed it for only $17

Geez, 1 1/2 hours. I am jealous. My tech was here for four hours. Had to leave to get parts twice. He replaced everything in the panel except the cross connect block for the phone wiring. Regardless of the time, everything is working fine and he was personable.

A lot of people do not know of this method but for less than $50 it is generally possible to supply the same number of data ports as before. In my case, my Quantum router does not quite reach my bedroom with full signal strength, so I am thinking about investing.in the Orbi wifi mesh system and get as wireless as I can. My tech was also at my house for a few hours. I even called in a ticket to have someone come back and put all the coiled up fiber that was on the side of my house in a protective box.

google mesh is easy and approachable to non-techs too.

I use 2 nodes to cover my three levels very well (one node on main and upper level).

I just got the TP-Link Deco and am thrilled with the purchase. I too suffered from Wi-fi dead spots and really see the coverage boost now. Really easy to set up and in my case... comes with 3 nodes to cover my house, deck, patio and 3 levels. Running the speed test on my Deco a minute ago shows me 485 down and 874 up.

And in case this might be helpful to someone else... I had a Win 7 machine in my basement that I was able to upgrade to Win 10 for free (official and legit). Let me know and I can send you the instructions I found.

I noticed that when I did a speedtest on my laptop...the internal Network card does NOT go up to 1 Gig...it goes only up to 100 MB... This blows. Only way to get this boosted if I have someone replace the internal network card on my laptop which would be a royal pain in the arse and cost me plenty of $$$ to have someone to do that. However, my Ipads and and Mac Book are blazing fast with both accepting up to 996 MB up and down.

There are cheap adaptors you can buy for about $30. One is a USB wifi adaptor. You would need to install the driver and go into the Device Manager and disable your other wifi adaptor. There is also also a USB ethernet adaptor that will emulate a faster connection, but it may be designed for USB 3. I bought both of these, used them on a laptop with the same constraints and got modest boosts to my network speed.

I understand but if I’m using the Ethernet on my computer, the max is 100mbps - is have to replace the Ethernet card if I want to be on the Ethernet- that’s my point-

    Thanks

I think Excelsior is talking about something like this
    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-1000-Gigabit-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B00M77HMU0

The reality is that if your computer is old enough that the Ethernet is only 100mb then you will likely have issues getting those faster speeds. Memory, cpu, and disk all come into play with network speed as well. The computer needs to be able to keep up with the data coming in. Sometimes the machine itself becomes the bottleneck.

Yes. I had a hp pavilion i bought in 2010. It had a 100/100 nic. I plugged in Fios and said what the heck. I then bought the ethernet to usb adaptor and got 270/270. But that overwhelmed my memory and processor so it did not feel faster. After buying a new computer over the weekend with the gigabit nic, i got darn near the 940/880.

Unless you have thunderbolt or usb3... an external adaptor is not going to get you gigabit speeds. The interface is slower than the network,

Again... gigabit networking for Internet is not about one computer reaching those speeds... it’s more about having multiple devices getting high speed without crowding each other out on the shared network. So don’t worry about your computer not reaching these speeds except for trying to measure the network.

Even in desktop computers this was a problem and where the adaptor is in the design impacts this. For modern PCs this isn’t a problem...
