We're in a winterset built in 2003 and our fireplace has started acting up. The pilot light stays lit but after being turned on for 5-10 minutes it shuts completely off and the pilot light has to be relit. I believe the thermocoupler is likely bad. I've tried cleaning it but it did not improve.

Has anyone had to have their fireplace repaired? Just curious as to the cost of the repair. I know the part is around $10 but I would like to have it looked at and inspected as well as we just had some work done to the house.

    Thanks

I'm giving this company a try

    https://amazing-flame.com/

quoted me $224 to come out to do the inspection/diagnosis/repair. Parts will be extra if needed. I'll let you all know how it goes next week.

Thermocouples go bad. You should try replacing it first.

Normally I would agree but in this case we just had our contractor relocate the exterior vent from the back of the house to the roof. I believe the thermocoupler is bad but I also think there is too much air getting into the device. Plus there was a ton of construction dust and debris that I already vacuumed out. It will be interesting to see what the pros say. If it ends up just being the thermocoupler then great it needs the inspection anyway. I'm interested to hear what they say.

Just curious - why did you re-route the vent?

We had a screened in porch added to our back deck and the county inspectors would not let the fireplace vent into the porch so it had to go out the roof.

A quick update. The service tech called about 30 minutes before the visit and showed up about 5 minutes before. He came in and took a look at the new duct work and modifications and then started his inspections. Turns out our fireplace never had a working blower and he fixed that for me. The part to repair was $35 but he offered to just set it to manual which I accepted. After doing a thorough cleaning and inspection he found that the sensors were functioning but the additional updraft caused by the new duct work was causing the pilot flame to not touch the thermocoupler. He created a pilot hood to reduce the up draft on it which appears to have resolved the issue. He also cleaned the unit well and installed some new ember cloth stuff. The fire never looked so nice before. Price was just as stated. Very pleased with the repair and friendliness of the tech. The diagnosis and cleaning/repair ended up taking about an hour and a half.

Amazing Flame is the company to call. They just left my house and my 20 year old fireplace is working better than when it was installed new. These guys are the real deal. Thanks to the forum for sharing. I am very happy to have called them.

Having gone through this issue and process recently I thought I would give a shout out to NoVA Fire Design. I had a hard time finding anyone willing to come and help, all claimed jammed schedules etc. NoVA Fire Design helped me over the phone and came out to help. Did an awesome job on 2 Fireplaces at a fair price, much more reasonable than other quotes. Be careful, seems like more price gauging happening around this kind of business.
