Our DVD player will pause momentarily several times per movie, and sometimes just totally freeze up. We had an older one that acted similarly, and we ended up throwing it away and buying a new one. Now we can't watch a movie enjoyably through this one. Any ideas what's going on or if there's something I can do about this?

    thanks

If it's doing it on most DVD's at around the Half way point, it's because the DVD is a Dual layer dvd, and the player is resetting on the second layer. it usually happens on all Daul Layer dvd's. it' normal. The freezing up problem, I don't know. You may have a DVD that is dirty, (especially rentals). good luck

I had a similiar experience .. viewing Netflix DVDs ..time to time .. it is usually associated with that particular DVD ... one sure way to test of course is to pop in another DVD and see if you can duplicate the problem ... If you can not .. you have a damaged DVD disk rather than a DVD player .. good luck !

Before you blame the player, take the DVD and wash it in water. Don't use soap, just plain water. Although I have heard that using mild dish soap and warm water is OK too, I worry about leaving a film.

Wipe it with a clean paper towel until it is dry, then retry the DVD. I do alot of Netflix rentals, as well as watch personally owned DVDs. Many times the screen will freeze and most often its due to scratches or dirt on the DVD.

Sometimes washing it will clear up the problem, other times, as happened just now to me, I have to return the DVD to Netflix and request a replacement.

Another way to check if the player or the DVD is at fault is to try another DVD, one that you know is playable. If the DVD plays correctly, then you know its the DVD itself.

wipe DVDs from the center to the edge only.. not in circles. wipe only with a soft, wet towel (I typically just use TP :) )

95 out of a 100, its just a scratched or dirty DVD disc. If it does it on all discs or discs that look perfectly fine. The player is probably screwing up.

Is the player level? Is it properly ventilated? Is it very hot where the player is? DVD players are VERY simple devices mechanically, but like all electronics they can be adversly affected if overheated or in bad environments.

As a last resort....get a can of compressed air, hit eject to extend the tray and blast some air into the player. Sometimes a tiny bit of dust in the wrong place can create problems.
