The last time I went there, it would not take credit cards. You had to go inside to pay cash. Needless to say, I left to go somewhere else. But I was not happy because I wanted my 6 cents off per gallon!

When was this ?? Was it only a certain pump, or were all the pumps involved ?

It seemed to be all of them. I only tried one pump, but another woman warned me about it first, so I didn't bother to try a different one.

It may have been caused by a data link outage ... I was able to fill up the other day without a problem using my card.

No problems today, other than they cranked it up another .02 right after I left.

Some things correct in there, but some not either.

Higher temps in the cylinder can cause pre-ignition of the fuel, but that is not 'knock'. Pre-ignition typically causes instant catastrophic engine failure, and typically requires more then just high cylinder temps, but a source such as a build up on something acting as a ignition source.

'knock' or 'ping' is from detonation which is uncontrolled burning of the fuel. The 'ping' is actually a resonance of the engine block from the explosion.. or knock is from the out of synch 'explosion'. Remember, in an engine, its actually a controlled burn, not an explosion under normal conditions.

The article is correct in that running too high of an octane fuel will gain you nothing if your engine computer will not take advantage of it. So to all the kids thinking if they add octane booster or race gas to their little honda thinking it will give them more power.. sorry. Its only 'potential', your computer must adjust its timing and A/F handling to make use of it.

But the fuel doesn't 'collect' in the cats.. the risk is the fuel will not be totally burnt in the combustion, and gets back into the emissions system where it can actually 'burn up' your catalytic convertor causing them to pre-maturly fail. Also, too high of cylinder temps can cause pre-mature failures as well of the cats.

But most of these concerns are for modified cars. Factory cars are overbuilt so much to allow for swings and accomodations of lots of conditions. People would be screaming bloody murder if their Ford engine blew up today because they bought cheap gas yesterday.

Basically for your factory cars.. use the recommended grade of gas. Use of less *can* lessen performance, but not typically something of the level you'd notice unless you have a performance car. Don't worry about hurting your engine by using 93 octane vs recommended 91. That's only a concern if you try putting 100 octane race gas in your grocery getter thinking it is going to gain you 10 horsepower :)

That article is probably pretty dated as well.. given I think the statements about 'only performance' cars and 91 octane isn't as true anymore. With the stricter emmissions standards and current horsepower wars.. that isn't as true anymore

to follow on what others have said or not said

    - 91/93 octane can produce more power because of advancing the engine timing in conjunction with the air/fuel mixture, controlled by the ECU. If you tweak the ECU you can measure HP power increases, for example:

2.7L bi-turbo Audi S4 with an APR ECU upgrade
    91 octane 307hp/366 ft/lbs
    93 octane 318hp/382 ft/lbs

There are ECU programs for 100 octane, which really benefit cars that go to the track.

    - I have first hand experience from the results of detonation (pinging). These explosions blew a hole in my head gasket at the #3 cyl. in my VW, a nice puff of white smoke, a sputter, stall and drift to the side of the road. So if you are experiencing detonation, check to see what may be causing it.

    - As for the XC90, we have an '03 2.5T and have alternated 89, 91 and 93 without issue. The minimum requirement for 2003-2005 XC90s is 87 Octane ( http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/2003/2003_XC90/03xc90_10.htm )

"Fuel requirements: Octane rating Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium gasoline with an AKI octane rating of 91 or above. AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of the Research Octane Number, RON, and the Motor Octane Number, MON. ((RON + MON)/2). The minimum octane requirement is AKI 87 (RON 91)."

Save the 87 octane for rental cars. :)
