The problem in the first place is the drivers...they don't care and aren't going to pay attention whether the sign says 5 or 50...that's why we are having this discussion.

I would like to see more speed bumps. As much as I hate them...they always slow me down!

Here's some info from Gurnee, IL: http://www.gurnee.il.us/community_dev/engineering/speeding.html

Here's one from the Federal Highway Administration:

    http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersections/interbriefing/10myth.htm

You have to read the article where it talks about unneeded stop signs and the resulting speedup between them.

    And one more:

    http//www.ctre.iastate.edu/pubs/tsinfo/faq13l.doc

All these were pulled up in a Google advanced search on "speeding study stop signs"

This may not specifically deal with speeding, but last night at 8:30pm or so we were driving on waxpool headed west just pass where shellhorn and ryan meet at the all way stop when I noticed in front of the guy in front of me an ATV. This ATV was cruising at 45-50mph on waxpool headed to the Broadlands, I couldn't believe an ATV was on the rode at that time. We then noticed that there was not just one person but two people on it. The boy who was driving might have been 15 and the girl holding on for dear life was close to the same age. Neither one of them were wearing helmets and you could barely seem them because it was dark and the lights on the ATV were minimal. They stayed along side us all the way to Sunoco where they pulled in.
As is the case more often then not when you witness this behavior there were no police around.

Well look at the speed bumps near mill run. That road that goes between the schools. Oh my I see the SUVs fly over those things at 25-35 MPH every time I'm out there. It makes me cringe every time. Speed bumps only slow down people that care about their cars.

Only if you hate them because they keep you from speeding.

I don't speed in the community so that is irrelevant in my disgust for them. I hate them because they make me go 5 mph, instead of 25.. they throw everything around in my car.. they scrape my low car.. they make going down a slow road even slower when there are multiple cars.. etc

I was shocked today when a school bus (Loudoun county - number 101) came flying by my house. It was empty, but you'd think a school bus driver of all people would know to use caution and drive slowly on residential streets.

Anyone know where i can report this guy? I don't have kids in school so I know nothing about the school system, bus system, etc.

You can call the LCPS transportation office at (703) 771-6480. I reported a school bus earlier this summer that was illegally passing on the left and going 50 through a 25 in Sterling near Park View High School earlier this summer.

I find them annoying too. However, I think if you lived on one of these roads and had small children, you might feel differently.

Yesterday, while pulling into my driveway,a car, speeding down our road, tried to pass between my car and my driveway. They had to slam on their brakes and swerved to pass on the other side. I don't think speed humps are the greatest things either, but if it slows down just one idiot on these roads then it is worth it. We know stop signs don't work, we know speed limit signs don't work, and while the police can patrol occassionally through our neighborhood, unless they have a presence every day at every hour on every problem road, then I don't know what a good alternative would be.

It is unbelievable that what normal people get in a car and become a whole other person like the car makes them invincible.

They play Russian roulette with their children and families by running stop signs and traffic lights and speeding. Slowing down and rolling through a stop sign is still against the law. In the Regency people still speed even after a child was run over and killed although that tragedy was ruled an accident. Just as bad parents still allow their children to play out front and I could not believe what I saw last weekend several parents were sitting in lawn chairs in the cul de sac watching their very young children play in the street these children were less then 5 years old and when a car came to turn around they would get stares from these parents that could kill. And there was a huge common area and playground behind them. Figure that out.

The solution? take a picture of the speeders and publish that picture in the community paper. Those flashing speeding signs we see set up occasionally that show how fast you are going can be set up to take a picture of a speeder. It is a shame that Virginia disabled the picture taking traffic lights. Why would anyone care if they were not breaking the law on a regular basis? I don't buy the civil rights crap. We a tough on sex offenders and murders why are we so easy on potential murderers and murderers by vehicle of our children and families. We have gotten tough on people who drive under the influence yet more people die from falling a sleep at the wheel or being too tired to drive according to a study I read yet this potential legalized murder is just a slap on the wrist or non. Hey if you want to speed take your car to the race track, yes there are several tracks in the dc area that allow you to take the family car and go for it .

It is up to us to protect our families and children when in a car and out of a car the streets are not playgrounds even the quiet ones or cul de sacs.

More children will be murdered by these traffic offenders and people will all be upset and then after awhile they go right back to breaking the law unless some hard action is taken.

    Lee J Buividas

Talk here all you want but unless action is taken all this talk is meaningless.

Some may remember what it took to get a four way stop sign at Waxpool and Ashburn Village Dr it took several tragedies and many accidents before our government decided they did not need a year or more study and put up the signs up immediately after many a very serious crash.

Hardly. Publishing pictures of speeders hardly elicits the same community stigma that a publish pictures/addresses of sex offenders. What kinda person is going to see a picture of a blue minivan in the paper then be out on the lookout for said vehicle every time they're out?

    "THERE'S THAT ANIMAL!"

Then what? Key the car? A good ol' fashioned fist-shaking? Publishing pictures is no answer (everyone speeds at some point and generating contempt would be negligible), but taking a picture is. Simple solution would be traffic cameras that take a picture if you're speeding and generate a ticket be mailed to you...same for running redlights.

See Brim we can agree and I think your solution is much better then mine. :)

aye...besides, wouldn't taking a picture and posting it in the newspaper nullify your entire argument in the other thread? :)

How dare you suggest such a thing!

I'm kidding...I suggested the same thing quite a while ago on another speeding thread and got torn apart by the parents on here (I don't have kids, so clearly I'm not capable of dispensing common sense advice. If you have children, maybe they'll listen to you.).

Keep your kids out of the streets, people...streets are for cars, not playing.

Whenever this subject comes up, someone will always yak about how the kids shouldn't be on the street to begin with. There are reasons kids might be in the street even if they are not playing there.

Heaven forbid the kid has to walk across the street to get to their friend's house. Or go grab a ball that has gone into the street. Or ride their bikes or skateboards on the street because technically they are not supposed to do those things on the sidewalks.

Of course there is always the occasional adult bike rider or jogger who insists on running on the road instead of on the bike paths. So it's not just a matter of staying off the streets. Drivers should be careful in neighborhoods. Those two seconds you save aren't worth someone's life.
