    Any recommendations for dog groomers?

We have a 7 year old miniature schnauzer who has been groomed from birth by his breeder (who also boarded him for us). We acquired him at a year old when it became obvious that he was a little large for breed standard and could not be shown. Unfortunately, the breeder has recently moved out of state and we need to find someone else to do his grooming. We were given a recommendation in Herndon but my husband lost her contact information so we're looking for someone closer to home (unless we can find that little card somewhere!).

He doesn't require a show cut with stripping - we have him clippered (#10 blade against the grain) with a modified puppy cut to keep his beard and leg furnishings on the short side. He's gentle and is used to being worked with.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It may be out of the way for you, but Canine Carousel in Herndon does a great job. 703-709-8746

    I use the following:

TLC dog groomers (runs business out of her home)
    21132 Stonecrop Place
    Ashburn, VA 20147

    PetSmart in Sterling

Doggie Cruisers (another mobile dog grooming service..cheaper than Aussie Pet Mobile)

Stream Valley also has a groomer...haven't tried her yet.

    Good luck!

Stream Valley Vet's groomer does a very nice job...I boarded my Golden there for years and always had her groomed before she came home. Pet Smart in Sterling does a nice job, too

Do not go to Canine Carousel we took our Standard Poodle a couple of times, they did not do a good job on her cut. The final straw was when they clipped her nails very close and caused a tremendous amount of bleeding. We now go to Dog-A-Do in Herndon off of Grant Street. Kat is wonderful with our dogs we have a standard and a shih-tzu. We had a tough time with our Standard after her last grooming at Canine Carousel and Kat was very patient and worked with getting her in the door - she loves to go now.

I also use Dog-A-Do in Herndon. Kat is fantastic!! She came higly recommended from my vet, which to me speaks volumes.

I was also thinking of trying TLC - here in Ashburn that Liskey posted. I heard good things and she's less expensive than Dog-A-Do. We'll see. Can anyone else comment on TLC?

I was using TLC for awhile and I really like Vivian. I have a Shih Tzu and a Maltese so they need monthly grooming. The first couple times were real nice but it went downhill from there. Also, she could not handle my shih tzu when it came time for nail trim and ear hair pull. We had bloody nails a couple times. It seemed like my shih tzu got the upper hand and she just ran all over Vivian, nipping and refusing to sit still and just being a bad girl.

Also let me give you my two cents on Stream Valley... they are a rip off! and mediocre vets at that! I could write a book on them but will spare you.

I now have a vet and groomer in Winchester. Creekside Grooming and The Animal Medical Center of Frederick County. Both are fabulous! My Maltese just came home last night after major ear surgery, Dr.Cather is a "real" vet and runs a "real" animal hospital.

You may balk at the 50 minute drive but it is worth every mile!

Let me get this right, you'll drive an hour both ways to get your dog groomed, but you won't walk next door to talk to your neighbor. :)

Well, my mother lives in Winchester so it's a win win for me.

Why would I talk to those awful people after what they have said and done. Would you talk to your neighbors if they were calling the sheriff on you and your teenage daughter over things they should have spoke to me first about????? Now my other neighbors are terrific. Anyway, off topic.

Since my Mom is there the drive is worth it :)

We had a similar experience at Canine Carousel in Herndon. On two occasions our dog came home with a new leash because the one we sent in was torn in half. They claimed the dog chewed it. Obviously that was not the case! It had been cut...for more business or plain stupidity, I'm not sure. At any rate, I do not recommend them. PetSmart in Sterling does a good job!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who provided suggestions for dog grooming within a reasonable distance!

It turns out that our former groomer actually had suggested Dog-A-Do as an alternative. I didn't realize what a bargain we were getting before since we were charged $15 more than I had been paying before!

Overall, I'm happy with the grooming job - my dog looked nice with all of his furnishings brushed out, beard cut short as requested, nails trimmed well without any rough edges and a cute litte bandanna around his neck to boot.

What I miss from before is that my old groomer knew my dog's history from before his conception and the atmosphere - the dog simply loved going for grooming. It'll take a while for him to get used to the new place and hopefully he'll feel that way about it again as when I picked him up, he was moping. I was also offered some dog treats as a holiday gift which were appreciated and very thoughtful but as noted on his card there and also on his collar, he should not ever be fed without instructions as he's on a restricted diet (preservatives cause him to have IBS flare ups which require hospitalization - we have to buy special food or cook for him).

Surprising to me and thankfully not a problem was that I was told it would take about 5 hours to groom the dog so I planned out my day around that time period. I received a phone call 2 hours after I dropped him off asking for me to come get him - thankfully, I was able to get out there but that would have been a problem had school been in session that day.

As I said before, I am happy with the grooming job and plan to return there as soon as my schnauzer grows out again.

jdhauer, I had to post this to you too. Especially since I originally recommended Dog-A-Do, and just saw your post on Adams Mill Vet Hospital. They are actually the ones that recommended me to Dog-A-Do initially. Kat (the owner) has also been to Adams Mill for years. Wasn't sure if you knew that, and thought you might appreciate that too.

As I said on the vet thread, I *love* Adams Mill. You know you've spent too much time at the veterinarian's office when your dog has a file 3 inches thick and every member of the staff knows you by name...

I haven't met Kat yet at Dog-A-Do as she was out the day I had our schnauzer groomed but whomever else worked on him did a simply lovely job. He doesn't really need the services of a "master groomer" since he isn't stripped or shown but it's nice to know that there's a professional there since I've heard so many horror stories about dogs being left in dryers elsewhere (not locally).
