    cappy-
That's in the hands of Van Metre trying to get the right-of-way purchases from two landowners. If they cannot reach an agreement, the county will have to go through the condemnation process, which could take a while.

Actually Sycolin is very important. It is the most direct
non toll route to Leesburg. The only other option is to
take Belmont to Rt. 7. I have begun using Sycolin more often
    since the Greedway raised rates.

I agree that they should pave Broadlands Blvd. also but
personally use Sycolin far more often. In addition, Waxpool
is an easy option to get around it for now.

sycolin is direct.. but is a model of 'country back road' :) even paved its a back road to the extreme. I'd probably still go Belmont to rt 7 typically. but who knows.. maybe it would be nice enough once paved.

I bet the locals there fight it for that reason alone... to keep the through traffic out

Sycolin paved would not be much different than Belmont Ridge is now. It would be your basic two lane road but with only 1 traffic light from Belmont to the Rt. 15 Bypass and shorter as the crow flies than Belmont to 7. Locals may fight it but there are not too many people who live there now and some may prefer having better access.

Encourage everybody you know to show up for the public forum and comment in favor of paving Sycolin. It's a travesty that VDOT is taking this long to pave the most direct route to Leesburg.

Evergreen Mills and Belmont Ridge are nice, but they're not direct.

FWIW ... Sycolin is planned to be paved thru to Leesburg as a 4 lane divided road (up to the airport anyway). Part of it is to be done by proffers offered by the developer putting in the next subdivision fronting on Sycolin, and part by VDOT kicking in some.

The meeting was pretty basic. Essentially, the road will be pave (2 lanes total) in 2009, 2008 if the stars are all in alignment.

    Neilz,

You have incorrect information on Sycolin Road. It is not to be 4 lanes as stated. It is a 12 foot wide two lane road with paved shoulders. Also, VDOT reps said the funding was Federal not from VDOT, and nothing was said about proffers. But I do think there was proffers for something, if my recollection is correct.

    Additionally,

The hearing was more or less set up to get final guidance from citizens. Approvals are in place, funding is set. Everything was pretty much complete. The drawings were very detailed. Both sections of unpaved road are to be worked on simultaneously. The hearing was not about if the road would be paved but how.

18 months total for the project to be completed. A lot of talk about difficulties paving over the gas line. 2009 expected completion. 13 feet of dirt is to be installed at the steep grade approaching the Greedway Bridge as you head to Leesburg.

Most citizen comments seemed to focus on minimizing the impact to tree scape (at least from what I could hear). There was no formal presentation. Lots of easels and drawings. A good group of prepared VDOT reps to talk to informally. Comment was taken by written statement or recorded statement.

That's probably more than you asked for, but there you go.

The good news it is going to happen, the bad news is the amount of years it will take. The sad thing is the hundreds possibly thousand's more homes condos and apt will be built in this area before this road is built, overcrowding the already overcrowded roads. What we need before this is another gateway to 28. It would be nice if shellhorn could make its way to connect to sterling blvd at 28, before loudoun station and science city (claude moore property which has the potential to be the next tysons)really start to overwhelm this area. There are a lot of condos and apartments and offices and retail that will come on line in the next few years especially on both sides of the toll road around the home depot with no new way for all these people to get to 28 expect for waxpool and the toll rd. I wish I had time to make it to the hearing.

I understand there is a interactive computer model going to be made of northern va including loudoun that could be made available to the public in a few years. You will be able to drive walk whatever throughout the area and be able to see the impact of all the new development and potential new development like a video game. You will be able to sit in traffic at different times of the day and experience what traffic will really be like and visually be able to see the impact of what new buildings and also be able to see what these buildings will look like including the landscaping and what the visual will be when existing trees are torn down or left standing. I understand we will also be able to see what all this looks like through the different seasons and how long it will take for new landscaping to mature, all in beautiful 3d color. Personally I love this kind of technology and it will really help us all see the real impact of any proposed project small or large really has on us and the true visuals. This technology has been and is being used more and more around the country.

    Lee,

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I posted elsewhere how I am amazed how the Greedway is speeding through there road enhancements, and this couple mile project is going to take until 2009?!?! Come on.

Well, I was going on a developer brief for that area that said they were proffering the Sycolin paving as 4 lanes to match what was going to be there later.

Neither here nor there ... at least its on the schedule.

    Neil-

Actually- you may be thinking of the "Goose Creek Village North" rezoning from just a few months back. It's the property at the corner of Sycolin and Belmont Ridge Rd. It will create a "main street" feel on Sycolin for the first 1/2 mile to a mile west from Belmont Ridge(before the first bridge over the Greenway). The developer will be building 4 lanes- currently two will be travel, two will be parking. Once the bridge over the greenway is expanded (at someone else's expense), the developer will make this section 4 travel lanes. [I think I have all these facts straight, it went through a lot of revisions]

But, this is all the currently paved section, not any of the gravel section.
