It's ridiculous how dog owners don't pick up after their dogs. We live on Vestals Gap Dr., and frequently find dog droppings in our yard. We have a dog too, but always go out with our little shovel or a bag. I don't mind if your dog uses our yard when nature calls, but just pick up the droppings!!

And now it appears that someone is letting their dog paw shallow ruts in my lawn. A medium-to-large size dog appears to have scrapped off nice chunks of grass from my lawn -- there is dirt and grass all over the sidewalk and I've got gouges in my lawn that I'll have to reseed. If anyone sees who is doing this, or the type of dog, please let me know at this posting so I can address the issue with the owner.

It's true Dixie, that pet related topics have come up before on these forums. Mainly cleaning up after pets and being attacked by pets.

But I can also see the frustration that sandaddy (and many others of us) are having over these issues. Even though they have been the subject of past topics/threads, there seems to be no relief in sight from the rudeness of some pet owners.

So what can we do? Put up electric fences, attack each other, what?

Although I've seen a lot said, I've seen no real solutions. And that is indeed frustrating.

Can we add regulations for pet owners that are stricter in terms of clean-up or walking? If we do, how can they be enforced?

I'd sure like to see how we can resolve these issues because obviously they are upsetting to enough people.

This is a frustrating subject....we are dog owners and walk our dog daily and wouldn't dream of not cleaning up after her...and yes - there are owners who don't clean up their dog's poop, what's worse is when the dog poops on the sidewalk and they leave that as well. I don't know what is wrong with people who are not responsible enough to clean up after their dogs, but there is always going be people like that no matter where you go. Some people just don't like following rules or being told what to do. I don't know what the solution is, there certainly are enough poop bags and trash bins throughout the community. There is NO excuse for not cleaning up after your dogs. We have a path right behind our house and I've gone out several times and asked people to PLEASE pick up their dog's poop when I see them walking away. I don't get very good responses back....one person said - it was on a common area, not my yard and they didn't need to pick it up and I had no right to ask them to! WHAT??? Where did he get that idea from? It's one of my pet peeves, but I don't know what the answer is. [V]

Well said, tyger31. We're in the same boat as you. We always pick up after our dog, and it digusts me to see the folks that let their animal poop on the pathways/sidewalks in this community. Even if you run out of bags you should go get one (those bag stations are not that far apart), or at the absolute least move it off of the path so people don't step in it. But, also like tyger31, I don't have a solution for this.

That said, please don't turn this into a dog-hating topic....

Someone near our street did a funny thing a couple summers back when they had a problem. They made little signs that read something like 'Respect your neighbors, pick me up!' and placed one on each pile. I walked by to see over a dozen of them. After that they stopped for awhile and have not seen (many) droppings since.

There is actually a county ordinance to pick up after your dog, regardless of the location of the droppings. Therefore they DO have to pick up after their dog in the common areas.

Oh I know it's a county ordinance - but a lot of people either don't know that or just ignore it.

What always gets me when I am walking my dog is when I get near one of the common area spots that have the doggie stations. There are bags and trash cans right there but people still don't pick up after their animals. It is really quite disgusting.

I wonder how much of it is when kids walk their pets and are not aware of the fact that they should scoop the poop. My neighbor's son was walking their dog and I overheard him saying to the dog, "yeah, poop in someone else's yard so I don't have to clean it up". I think he truly thought that if the dog went anywhere other than his own yard then he wasn't responsible for it.

Then it's up to the parents to tell the child to be sure to pick up his dog's poop!!

I usually see kids pick up (I'm sure not all do) but it's usually adults I see doing it. Today, I saw a woman up on Claiborne with 2 large dogs. One was squatting as I drove by and leaving a load, she just walked away...guess she was too busy chatting on the phone to bother picking it up! Once, I saw a man step into the wet grass to pick it up and then realized it was wet. So, he pulled the dog onto the sidewalk, tucked the poop bag in his pocket and walked away. I guess people think nobody will notice...

As someone who walks around Broadlands with a dog, I agree that there are many irresponsible dog "owners." (I have not seen anybody not picking up.)

As a social scientist, this is a difficult problem to have an impact upon since threre is seldom a witness. Hence, no reinforcement - postive or negative.

The bags and containers are wonderful.

We should ask our neighbors why they don't pick up when we see this.

Also, my sense is that the vast majority of dog walkers are responsible.

I'm afraid all the respondents on this thread are part of the "Choir" as it relates to cleaning up after pets. It is a real shame that a few irresponsible pet owners can make it a real issue in an area where many people do care and do clean up after their pets.

Recently my wife saw a teenage girl walking her dog on our side yard and did not clean up after it. When my wife asked her to clean up, the girl went home and her mother came back over and yelled at my wife. Are people crazy???

I don't know the solution either. There is a county ordinance pertaining to this issue but if people are doing this without witnesses it is basically impossible to enforce.

I do like the idea that one poster referred to where someone made little signs that read something like 'Respect your neighbors, pick me up!' and placed one on each pile. Maybe even that would help. I don't know.

But when we do see people not cleaning up, we should call them on it whenever we can.

I'd simply take my camera with me when they do it.. and when the mom comes back to yell.. ask her if she'd like her photo taken too.. to go with the one of her daughter going to the police for a complaint :)

Obviously if someone is going to behave like that they aren't being reasonable and simply need some outside 'assistance' to remind them of their responsibilities

A Broadlands Doody Patrol website would garner attention, even national web traffic. Likely candidate for advertising dollars for a community HOA. It's wierd enough.

    ;)
