Someone in B-lands has a house in the outer banks. Also check ResortQuest.com. I prefer Corolla (Buck Island). Enjoy. Hopefully I'll be back there sometime next year.

We have been going to the outer banks each August with a group of 15+. We have found reasonable prices through Joe Lamb Jr. Realty. They have a good selection of homes and seem to always have better prices than the other rental companies we have checked. FWIW, its pretty late to be booking an August rental as most homes are already booked but you should still find some options.

The best part is the beach. The water temperature in late August is around 80 degrees typically which is great for swimming. Fishing is also good either from the piers or even surf fishing.

Fun things to do include Wright Brothers Museum, Roanoke Island / Manteo, several historical lighthouses, and Jockey's Ridge State Park.

I agree with Skins Fan that you will have some difficulty finding a rental this late in the game. Most folks book over the winter.
As for which area to stay. That depends on your vacation/lifestyle. The northern beaches (Duck Corolla) are quiet but higher end and kind of yuppified . The middle section (Kitty Hawk to Nags Head) is busier but has more amenities like restaurants and shopping. It also has a lot more to offer if you need to keep the kids entertained. The farther south you go (Rodanthe, Avon, Hatteras) the quieter it becomes. (Although not nearly as quiet as it was 10 years ago). Personally I prefer Avon. It's centrally located on Hatteras Island so I can shoot up to Nags Head if I need to or I can shoot down to Cape Point or Hatteras inlet for some fishing.

well in the OBX.. being 'on the beach' isn't really important unless you are concerned over the view. Everyone has to walk to the beach itself.. over the dunes, down the street, etc. The big deal is how far you are from the beach in distance.

As long as you are on that side of the highway and there is a dune crossing there.. that's good. Only in a few areas can you actually be more then a hundrend yards or so from the dune.

Use the satelite map sites to get a good guage of the property to the dune crossing point.

If you are looking to save money, you should book the last week of August starting the 26-27th weekend. Rates go down dramatically. They are also lower on the weekend before but not as much. NC schools go back by that time so the demand drops. Otherwise, you are going to pay top dollar.

Something to consider - September is usually beautiful down there...low rates, less people......

We have a rental house in the Rodanthe area. The beaches are beautiful and it's less crowded. The location is ideal (75ft) from the beach and it has a pool and hot tub. If you're interested, here's the rental site, we love it down there!!!
