On the ballot this November will be an item to fund the Broadlands Recreation Center. This will be located along Belmont Ridge Rd, just south of the water towers. It is planned to have a 37.5 meter indoor pool, but Supervisor Snow is trying to get a 50 meter pool. Here's a note from his office about what you can do:

Supervisor Snow needs your assistance in getting the CIP amended to include an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Currently the CIP calls for a 37.5 M pool and Supervisor Snow believes it needs to be expanded to 50 M. We have
estimated the difference to be approximately $3 Million.
Anything you can do to pass this information on to supporters of the Recreation Center or pool is greatly appreciated. Please encourage supporters to contact the Board by email:
bos@loudoun.gov or via phone 703-777-0204. In addition, they can speak at any of the Board Meetings or Public Hearings.

Now that the county is building this facility this could be part of the answer to all these teen issues everyone likes to complain about. If making calls to the supervisors can get another 50 Meter pool here in our community that would benifit everyone.
The difference between a 37.5 meter pool and a 50 meter pool is similar to the difference between our pools at the community center and the pool at southernwalk. If a 50 M pool is built it will give the local high school swim team a closer place to practice as well as more time. A 50 M pool will allow room for lap swimming, swim lessons, a team's practice as well as free space for others to play all at the same time. A 37.5 M will allow 1 of those activities at a time not all 4.
This is something that will benifit all of us even if you are not a swimmer as it provides some needed infastructure that this area is lacking so please take the time to call or write the BOS

.. and a potential revenue stream for the pool right? a 50m pool could be 'rented' to teams and other activities.. making it cheaper to operate for the county

Hey, the BOS members actually e-mail back (or someone on their staff at least). That surprised me.

Take a minute and send an e-mail for a facility that will benefit a lot of people, in the county and our part of it, for a long time. Once it is built, they can't go back and make the pool bigger.

    Snoopy,

Since it is being built by the county, my guess is that it would be just like Ida Lee - one price for In-County and another price for Out-of-County residents. It should be a big boost for everyone in our area - classes, open swim, high school teams, clubs, rental space, kids, adults, seniors, etc. This would benefit a lot of people.

Like many of you on this forum I sent an e-mail to Supervisor Snow and the rest of the Loudoun County BOS regarding a 50 meter pool for the proposed Broadlands Rec Center. His office sent this e-mail so I thought I'd pass it along...

    Dear Friends,

At Wednesday's Budget worksession, I attempted to win support from my
colleagues to increase the funding to expand the pool at the Broadlands
Recreation Center. The Board voted to table the issue until Tuesday. The
Board also directed staff to see what proffer funds are available to
make up the difference of $2,775,000. I am optimistic that if the
proffer funds are available and can be used for this project, we will be
able to expand the pool. If not, I intend to ask for an increase in the
bond for November in order to expand the pool from 37.5 meters to 50
    meters.

On Tuesday, the Board will be discussing the budget and setting the tax
rate. While I am confident that this will stay in the CIP as currently
proposed, the Board needs to continue to hear from you about your
support for the expansion of the pool.

Thank you for your many emails and support for the Rec Center to the
Board. Your input is very important for the Board to hear and see. I
will keep you informed of any developments.

    Regards,

    Steve Snow

    Dear Friends,

During today's Board meeting and budget worksession, I successfully won
support from my colleagues to expand the pool at the Broadlands
Recreation Center. Thank you very much for your support to the Board, I
am confident that your input made a difference.

I was able to successfully negotiate funding for the expansion of the
pool from 37.5 meters to 50 meters with staff and my fellow Board
members. The bond amount will stay the same and the additional funds
will come from proffer money. Again, thank you for your support and I
look forward to working with you to pass voter referendum in November.

    Regards,

    Steve Snow

    This is great news.

Just need to get the bond referendum passed in November.

Perhaps this will be a reason to get the Broadlands/Ashburn Farm/Brambleton/Belmont folks out to vote.

    Cliff,

Given all of the swim teams in this area, it should be easy to spread word of the Nov bond referendum this summer. Can you ask your contacts to get the word out to the various HOA's swim teams?

Here's the latest from Steve Snow about the Broadlands Rec Center...

    April 20, 2007

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    Contact: Michael Hengemuhle

PHASE II OF THE DULLES SOUTH MULTI-PURPOSE FACILITY APPROVED

Under the initiation of Supervisor Stephen J. Snow (R-Dulles), Phase II of the Dulles South Multi-Purpose Facility will go to bond in 2008 and will be built ahead of schedule with a full recreational facility to serve the residents of southeastern Loudoun, located on proffered land in Dulles South.
During last night’s reconvened Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Snow received support from his fellow board members to include Phase II of the 83¸000 square foot facility in the County’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The Board agreed to place the project in FY09 and it will go to voter referendum in November 2008. “I am most appreciative of my colleagues support and willingness to work with me to bring needed services to the Dulles District” Snow said. This action accelerates the construction of the facility and officially secures its place in the County CIP.
In 2004, Supervisor Snow was instrumental in getting the Multi-Purpose Facility placed on the ballot. Snow worked with his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors to increase the scope of the project, and have Phase I built ahead of schedule. A 9,000 square foot Multi-Purpose Facility was originally placed in the CIP in 2003 to be built in 2008 but was removed from the CIP during budget deliberations in spring 2004. Supervisor Snow fought to have it placed back in the CIP. The $9 million approved in 2004 expanded the Multi-Purpose Facility from 9,000 square feet to 23,900 square feet. This amount included $3.7 million for the Architecture and Engineering of the entire facility. Supervisor Snow fought to include Phase II in 2005 and 2006 but failed to win majority support.
Supervisor Snow called this year’s CIP a success for the Dulles District. “This year’s CIP is a major victory for the residents of the Dulles District” Snow said. In addition to the Multi-Purpose Facility, Supervisor Snow was successful in accelerating construction of another high school in the Dulles District in order to relieve congestion on the current high schools in the district. Snow also secured additional funding to furnish and purchase the books for the Gum Spring Library. The Broadlands Recreation Center also received additional funding this year after Supervisor Snow convinced his colleagues that the pool size needed to be expanded from 37.5 meters to 50 meters to better accommodate the growing competitive swim teams and the residents of his district. The Gum Spring Library and the Broadlands Recreation Center will go to referendum this fall.
