Does anyone here know the candidates for the Broadlands HOA Board of Directors slots included in the latest Broadlands Newsletter? I'd be interested in what people think / know about them.

Brian and Donna are both running for re-election. They both are fairly active on the forums. Donna has been involved longer (and on the board longer). She originally made a name for herself when she organized the community against the HCA Hospital planning to come here. My understanding is that she did such a good job that Loudoun Hospital gave her a job. Whether you agree with her about the hospital or not, I think it attests to her level of commitment to the community. As a board member, she has better established the Neighborhood Watch, and is continuing to work on that.

I don't know Brian as well since he was appointed to replace someone who left just this year, but you can read some of his posts online.

Erica is another resident who has been very active for the community prior to running for the HOA. She has organized the Southern Walk community about the problems with Openband. There recently has been news coverage about her work and she also has posted forum messages. I think her commitment in this regard also shows that she has time and interest to support the community.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with either Eric as I recall.

Eric Bazerghi is also very active on the forums. As a member of the tech committee he is one of the people that helped create what we have today as our website. Without his work here in the community (and the rest of the tech committee) we would not even have these forums. As a former board member I can atest to all the hours Eric has put into this community.

Eric Steenstra helped to create and organize the Broadlands Live concerts. He is one of the people who first proposed the concept to the board and then helped organize it into a selfsuffcient program today.

I have the priviledge of knowing all 5 people running this year and any of them will work hard to represent you. But if anyone has specific question about any one canidate I will be happy to answer just PM me, at leat I can tell you from my experience.

I don't think it was mentioned in his application as well, but Eric Bazerghi is also one of the 2 (myself being the other) who has run the LAN Gaming events for the last few years. He was the network guru of it all, buying the hub, getting the cables, making it all work. Believe me, it may sound easy but it’s not when you need tables (which we bought), cables, power, buying pizza, snacks, drinks, etc for upwards of 20 people with computers.

Expanding just a bit on where Eric mentioned he helped in working on getting broadband internet access before we all had cable in blands north. Both Eric and I met and worked with about a dozen internet service providers (from wireless radio, to fiber to laser to one so 'secret' they wouldn't even tell us unless we signed an NDA) to get us high speed internet access in the Broadlands north. We worked with several wireless ISPs that failed, eventually working with helping to get Verolan up and running all before Adelphia came into being here. That was over a year long effort in itself, and countless hours meeting with contractors, driving up and down streets doing wireless surveys, testing equipment, etc.

If you have been to one of the Easter bunny or Santa events where the HOA has passed out free printed photos (and downloads of the digital), he was heavily involved in that effort as well so you may recognize him at the meeting. Eric helped pick out the printers and camera we used, helped setup the first trial runs and has even used his own computers at the events to keep it running smoothly. If you were handed a photo at one of these events, it was most like Eric handing it to you. It’s hard to describe what a massive effort it is to create a system to take a photo in one part of a building, wirelessly transfer it to a printing station and get it printed all under 2 minutes so the person leaving can get it on the way out. At our peak we had 4 computers, 2 printers and 5 people making it work.

He's also done a lot of other smaller stuff for the community not mentioned in his application, like showing up at one of the HOA board meetings to give his $.02 on the network security for the pool passes we're all getting (before we signed the agreement with the contractor). He's also helped buy and setup 2 computers, one at the Nature Center and one at the Community Center for residents to use at meetings and functions.

Remember the Halloween parades? One year we handed out glowing necklaces. Eric was there. Another year we handed out SPACE ICE CREAM! Eric's idea. Several years in a row we've brought in a company that does face painting, Eric helped out behind the scenes there as well. Those may not sound like a lot, but behind the scenes thinking about what to get, what to do, researching the best prices, buying it, etc takes a lot of work.

On top of all of that he's been at just about every Flicks in the Sticks event, helping put the tarps up, setting up the speakers, breaking it all down when it’s over, etc. And that just the stuff you see, behind the screens (rim shot) we've had to figure out how to make it all work (what projector to buy powerful enough to display on a tarp so far away, what sound equipment to get, tarps - the list goes on). Eric was huge in all of that.

Then you have a new website that should come on line shortly replacing our 'aging' current one. Eric is one of the project leaders on that project (configuring the software, managing permissions, etc).

So if you want someone that really cares about the Community - put your vote for Eric Bazerghi.

Been procrastinating on this a bit, but I'll be sure to make up my mind tonight. Anyway, since you said that both Erics are active on the forums, do they care to be identified by their user names? I don't know which ones they are.

Also, a quick Google on Eric Steenstra shows he's the President of Vote Hemp. Lots of stuff on that site explaining it's totally not about marijuana. He's also on the board of Loudoun Foundation, which does the Loudoun Summer Music Fests at Belmont Country Club. And he's the guy who saved two kids from the pond a few years back. Anyway, I found it all interesting.

I'm Eric Bazerghi, also known as Mr. Linux on these forums. And yes, that's me driving that Ford Explorer with the plates of the same name :)

I'm amazed that this thread has only gotten a bit over 330 views since April 29th. Aren't residents the least bit interested in the HOA and whom will make decisions impacting their community?
