Gotta give mad props out to an outstanding program. If anyone is buying a new PC and wants to migrate all your software, files and settings over, get yourself a copy of Laplink PCmover.

I bought it a few months ago mainly for the laplink USB cable for other uses.

Anyhow, got to test out the software yesterday whem migrating my kids old desktop computer over to a laptop. Pretty basic stuff actually.

Install on both machines, select one for new, one for old.
Check what you want moved over (files, cookies, backgrounds, etc etc)
Continue to programs. It then connects to the other machine (I did it over the LAN network instead of the USB cable for faster speed). It then compares the 2 accounts (you select) and then compares what programs can be moved over. Things like IE, already installed default games and such get turned off.
Select it to go, and bam. ~3 gigs of kids games and 30 minutes later everything is migrated over.

Everything worked perfectly, was pretty amazed. Nice stuff! Even works with Vista after downloading the patch. Not having to reinstall ~20 odd Dora the Explorer, Winnie the Pooh, Strawberry Shortcake etc etc games is a godsend (not to mention all the save game files). So if anyone is buying a new computer, this is one really easy way to move all your files and software without reinstalling everything.

I used Windows built in Files and Settings Transfer program to do this once. It served the purpose and worked fine.

Wow - I haven't heard the name "LapLink" in forever!

Now, does this actually move the installed files (along with required registry hacks) over too? Or is it JUST settings like the MS program does?

Hmm, not sure. I don't know if any of the games and whatnot had any registry entries. But it moved all of their games (even 3dmark01 which I forgot I even had on that machine) and savegames perfectly.

I'll have to look into the M$FT version to see what exactly it does. I'm not sure I'd trust it to get anything right however.
