They were flight checking the new runway at night over the weekend.
I'm sure that's what the noise is.

I heard it...woke me up from a sound sleep... I actually thought a plane was crashing.

It was the loudest that I have heard any flight out of Dulles.

The plane was so loud I thought it was going to pay me a visit and meet me in person.

That is not good news for this area if that is the kind of noise people can expect at night. Although I did not hear a thing :)

I doubt it will be a regular thing. They fly a lot of unusual patterns when checking out a new runway.

You really think it'll be unusual, Cliff? I've been amazed how many "heavies" we get over us in SW (near the Walgreen's). All I can figure is they take off on runway 30 and make an immediate turn heading due North. Lumbering right over Brambleton and then us.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the new runway (since it's a mile west of the others) placing more plane traffic over Broadlands. All it would take is a 20-30 degree westward turn after takeoff to the north, and it puts the plane right over Broadlands (and at a lower altitude than the existing N/S runways).

    Just a thought.

First the Dulles airport should never let homes be built so close to it, especially since it was here since the sixties. Further you would of thought the airport sound engineers would of done a better job with the so called noise zones.

DFW in texas has done a far better job when they built that airport buying up tons of land to mitigate the sound from the surrounding area. This again seems to go with the territory in Loudoun with piss poor land planning. Further the planes were much louder when Dulles was built so even back then they should of been looking to the future and bought as much land as they wanted and then lease it off to become flex and industrial heaven. Our land planning and zoning outside the big pubs by the major developers really sucks and as it develops it shows we need the big good neighbor developers to plan all of what is left of eastern Loudoun otherwise if it is left up to the county and citizen planners we are in for further nightmares. I am just amazed from the first modern pud countryside then ashburn village and the farms then landsdowne and of course the beautiful broadlands and all the other beautiful puds after we are now connecting everything with visually irritating impact and it just gets worse by the day outside the puds but not everything. I am sorry but it just shows you need innovative professional planners with proven track records like many of the puds were planned by to plan whats left of loudoun or at least mitigate the visual impact from much of the disposable architecture strip centers and industrial that is now invading Loudoun. The puds are far better professionally planned then most anything outside them. Well at least western Loudoun has not been trashed out as of yet. :)

If that is in fact the kind of noise we can expect when the new runway opens, I'm putting a for sale sign up now. I've lived in Ashburn since the early 90's when the Concorde flew over and I've never heard anything like last night's plane. I fully expected to see a 777 in my kitchen. Why would the airport allow that to happen at 1:59 in the morning? I'm calling the number and complaining. Not that it would do any good but it's worth a shot. :angryfire:

Before you sell your house - also remember that the sky had become overcast/misting late last night. That traps the sound and keeps it bouncing back and forth from the clouds and ground (at least that's a layman's understanding). That heightens the noise level.

it was a royal air force vc10 on the old runway so don't sell your house yet :) the new runway is not working yet and the operations manager told me it is a shorter runway and probably be used for commuter aircraft mostly.

He said he has never had so many calls in all the years he has worked there:)

You can see what flew over on this site.

Further the operations manager said military planes loud like this fly in from time to time and use the east north south runway mostly he did not know why last night they decided to use the other runway last night. Perhaps loud military jets like this if they have to fly in on a regular basis like this one does should be using military bases that are used to this kind of noise. Just a thought;) They allowed the homes so the airport should be a little bit more accommodating as this area grows even more and more or buy us all out. Which they did at the end of one of LAX's runways ;)

It's about 1/2 mile west. The only possibility I see of aircraft being closer is if they are departing north and they make a turn westward.
Right now, those planes fly over Ashburn Farm. They could end up closer to Broadlands.

This runway will have no impact on the current situation with the Int'l departures in the afternoon departing to the northwest and turning over Broadlands.

    Lee-
I don't think that's true. That runway should be able to handle everything from B747's and smaller...

That is what the operations manger told me at this phone number if you want to call 703-572-8215.

Don't remember his name tho, but he said he never received so many complaints :)

Perhaps they plan to use it more for commuter flights I don't know and Cliff my friend you should know way more then me :)
