I know it's the great, mysterious principle of "lift," but I still don't see how such large planes can make such significant turns at such a low altitude. Nonetheless, it makes afternoons in Broadlands (and eating ice cream at Coldstone in Brambleton) TONS of fun!

Let's hope it'll be used primarily for commercial commuter planes and not corporate business jets. The latter are not subject to the same engine sound limitations - one of those citations or gulfstreams can make more noise than a lumbering 747.

Being at the top of the hill in Southern Walk, it freaked us out a bit, to say the least. We just saw a plane fly over at 7pm and that was close enough; the noise was nothing compared to last night. Either it was only a couple hundred feet up or could in fact be a military jet - but why let them go at 2am when they know they make so much noise.

Thanks for the number.......... we'll be calling tomorrow!

Loudoun County's parcel database has information about airport noise throughout the county. Enter an address and when it comes up, click "map it" to see the parcel. Then on the left choose "map layers" and then under "layer groups" select "all" and then check the box for "airport noise contours."

We used to live right in the red zone!

The only noise we ever hear is there is always one heavy that goes over at like 10:45-11:30 or somewhere in that range. Always one bird - that seems to go over forever... like 2-3 minutes. But its only one plane and always that departure window.

Being near an airport or near flight paths can have an impact on your property assessments.

I didn't hear the plane on Sunday, but I must say that I've enjoyed living near the airport. To me it doesn't impact my quality of life when a bird flies low overhead. My husband thinks I'm wacky, but I will frequently check my watch when I see particular planes overhead just to see if they're on-time. Then again, I might obsess a little too much about airplanes....especially the German ones!

I have a friend who is with the MWAA... here is what he told me:

The airport operations office received several noise complaints from Ashburn, VA. They have reported it to the FAA, and to our Noise Abatement Manager-Neal Phillips-for proper follow-up. I know that Andrews Air Force Base had their annual open house this past weekend. We have had some additional military aircraft at Dulles this weekend due to that airshow.

You should not be seeing this kind of thing on a regular basis. If you do, I would sure like to pass along your comments to Neal.

Would they ever come back and tell people what they found out? Or is it just complain and they look into the matter with no feedback?

When we called to complain on monday, the lady said she'd get back to us with their findings. I honestly doubt we'll hear anything, but that was her response and she took our address and phone number.

Why is there so much misinformation on what should of been a simple matter. We have gone from they are testing th new runway to perhaps it is a military jet from the air show. I was told by the Sunday operations manager it was a British military jet that flies into dulles on a regular basis.

He said other military jets also fly into dulles on a regular basis. hmmm This should not be hard to figure out what really happened at 2am Sunday morning for someone that works at dulles.

But when I pulled the departure records for Dulles from midnight to 4am Sunday, I could not find this military flight. hmmmmmm
