Yesterday I had my rear tag stolen off my SUV either at Home Depot, Home Goods, or where I first noticed it when I come out of Panera Bread yesterday. I know it was on Saturday. It is garage parked in my home so I doubt it happened there.

Never had anything like this happen before.

The police officer to came to investigate said we in Loudoun are seeing a large increase in crime in Loudoun by people coming in form other places. He also said he dreads the day metro opens out here as it is used extensively for criminals to go to the wealthier suburbs especially to steal cars and break-ins. He had a nickname which I can't remember exactly but something like they call the metro "the crime train" Something I did not know is the police, as they are patrolling around are always checking tags. And have caught quite a few criminals that way. :)

Someone just mentioned to me this trend today actually. Apparently this kind of theft is on the increase because people use your tag to go fill up their car with gas and then drive off without paying. If someone spots the tag, it's not really theirs.

It's the kind of thing I'd normally check out on Snopes first before jumping to conclusions, but an interesting coincidence to hear 2 stories like this on the same day.

Well, we can be assured no one stole it in an attempt to impersonate you!

We had our rear license tag stolen a few years ago. My husband noticed it was gone and was not going to report it... I had a fit and I reported the loss. The officer said then (and this was years ago) that this sort of thing was on the rise. This makes me sad!

We were told that if we hadn't reported the loss, if a crime was committed with our license plate, we get charged with the crime! So it is very very important to report and replace your license plates if you notice them missing.

yes call the non-emergency police line to report a stolen license plate... they will send out an officer as soon as possible.
