My wife and I were at the Regal Cinema in Brambleton today and saw a notice about a missing 13 year old from Ashburn Village. I subsequently found a notice on the Brambletonian forums, and I am copying it below.

URGENT BULLETIN: ONE OF AGSL'S SOFTBALL PLAYERS HAS BEEN ABDUCTED IN ASHBURN VILLAGE. PLEASE SEE BELOW & PASS ON TO YOUR DISTRIBUTION LISTS!!!!

    Parents,

I don't normally group email about personal data, but a girl from Jessica's basketball team, Rachel Cardenas went jogging yesterday in Ashburn and never came home. She is a rising eighth grader at Farmwell Middle School. You can never tell, but this does not appear at this point to be a runaway situation. Neighbors confirmed she was jogging and she left without cell phone or any personal belongings.

Details of the incident and a picture can be found here:

    http://www.missingkids.com/missingk...en_US&orgPrefix=NCMC&caseNum=1152704&seqNum=1

I know this is a long shot, but the first 24 hours are often critical. If you have seen her or know anyone that has seen anything suspicious in the Fincastle area yesterday, please call the Loudon County Sheriffs Office (703)777-1021.

Thank you in advance for any help in this effort.

    Dave

I've dropped this on two other forums and a village resident has it on FaceBook.

These stories make me an emotional wreck. Ppl have a false sense of security in ashburn and that creates opportunity for someone who wants to do harm. So glad this situation ended well, and I hope it has made both kids and parents see that there's no such thing as a place where "that type of thing doesn't happen." That's what we thought in bellevue nebraska until one of our own was raped and killed by a serial killer in our midst.

Well, she actually wasn't abducted, she was gone by her own choosing. That doesn't mean it can't happen here but people posting comments on message boards and FB should learn the facts before getting too frightened. Otherwise people as a group will remember it incorrectly that the girl was "abducted" rather than the truth. I'm just picky about the details like that after receiving a couple of emails from people about "OMG! A girl was abducted in Ashburn!" Well, no, not really she wasn't.

Of course, that doesn't mean it should be taken lightly, don't get me wrong.

While very tragic and scary when it happens, stranger abduction is still very rare.

I think it is important to treat all missing children cases as if they may have been abducted until found. I am glad she is safe.

I can't imagine considering facebook and msg boards as a source for facts, I always assume what I read here and there are aspweculation, rumor and drips and drabs of truth in between. I don't see the actual event as the point, I see ppl not forgetting that bad stuff can happen anywhere as the point.

I do, too, but apparently plenty of other people have a knee jerk reaction and don't get the facts before spreading misinformation.

Here's hoping Ashburn never sees an abduction.

I'm with ya villager. I think facebook can be very useful to get the word out the problem is whether or not the word is accurate! Its a different world now with the social media, for better and worse.

How is "a 13 year old girl is missing and she probably didn't run away" misinformation? i am glad for the knee jerk and i hope people don't look at missing child bulletins and say "oh she might have run away so i won't mention it to anyone...let's wait and see...". you know?
plus- a runaway child is a child in danger as well, you know.
KNEE JERK WHEN A KID IS MISSING!!! PLEASE!!!!

I am so glad that this girl was found safe. I was glad that everyone was looking for this child. A thirteen year old runaway is still at risk. I have never forgotten Erica Smith and the summer she went missing. Here is the link to her story http://www.amw.com/fugitives/case.cfm?id=46879. As parents, we like to believe that we know what is going on with our kids, but they can be masters of secrets. My parents are still learning of stupid things I did as a kid and I am over 40.

No, I understand. It's just that I received a frantic sounding email from a friend (which had been sent to her as part of a larger group) stating " VERY SCARY...I think this girl was abducted from right here in Ashburn Village." When I read the email she had forwarded it was simply the sheriff's dept. message about a missing girl. What bothered me was that as the message gets passed along, misinformation seeps in. I know, the fact that the word was getting out that a girl was missing was more important but I still was disappointed that the message was being forwarded with false information.

I didn't mean to start an argument, it just for some reason bothered me that I read several messages from people the mis-stated the situation, as serious as it was. I take the safety issue of our children very seriously so I wasn't trying to belittle or make light of the situation.

The main thing is that word gets out that the child is missing. When you see the term "edangered runaway" and no amber alert is released...the police are working on information that must have indicated that she left on her own accord, although you can rarely be 100% certain. Maybe she had an argument with her parents/boyfriend/friend, maybe she failed a math test, maybe she didn't make the travel team...all those things seem life alterring at that age. Glad she made it home safely. Certainly a reminder though that none of us, regardless of where we live are immune.
