Three people on my street, here in Overland Park on Humbolt Square, that I know of have the same issue. Verizon says our lines are fine, but the best we've gotten since moving in is 26.4K.

Broadband is not available from any of the respectable vendors, like AT&T, etc.

Is this something this forum can address to resolve? Is this something the HOA is responsible for resolving?

Are we simple in a hurry up and wait mode until the infrastructure is completed to support a bearable / reasonable Internet experience?

Anyone know if the poor response is because our community developers/builders used low quality wiring, like CAT3, instead of something respectable, like CAT5, CAT5e, or CAT6?

try swapping the wires on your phone jack before doing anything else.

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the tip; however, can you tell me what order the colors should be in from left to right? The link is also slow at the external grey box on the side of my house. Is that where I should be correcting the wiring problem? Why doesn't Verizon know this or are they wiring it this way to get us to use something else?

    Thanks
    Allan

well, it's unlikely that all three of you on your block would have your wires reversed or not using pairs, but its worth a shot. first verify that your lines are wired to colored pairs, orange/white & white/orange or blue/white & white blue ... one pair for each line. If not, your phone lines could be picking up noise (emi). the other thing to try is switch the wire polarity, ie move the orange/white (or other color pair) to where the white/orange is connected and vice versa...i was once told this affected 56k modem connectivity if not properly wired. can't vouch for its authenticity though. check out www.56k.com for info too. you may need to contact verizon too :(

The first year we moved in (over off of Chickakoan), nobody in our section could connect at anything faster than 28.8. Then mysteriously one day about a year later, everybody started connecting at 56k! I'm guessing it's a Verizon issue in your section and does not have anything to do at all with your house wiring. I have to say now that I am with Adelphia two-way cable modem, I am quite happy. I've only experienced two or three outages for a day or less! There's no time commitment when you sign up so it might be worth trying. Don't rely on their website to see if you can get service or not. You have to call them. Their website kept telling me that it was not available in my area; however, a call to their customer service line and I was up an running in less than 24 hours!

Ditto for Stonewheel Way -- gave up on my dial-up modem after getting no where with Verizon. Switched to Starband access, so never tried the dial-up modem again. However, this summer I had to configure another computer and used it's dial-up modem to download some updates and I was connecting at 52k. Tried my computer's modem and got the same speeds. Since I didn't change a thing in the house, Verizon must have done something.

I live at the Arbors apartments, and have a similar problem. Apparently a phone line can be split, so that two seperate lines can be carried over a single physical line. When this is done it limits your connection speed to something like 28K. I have tried and tried to get Verizon to give me a real phone line, but they say that they are only obligated to provide a voice grade line.
