Last night around 10:00 PM at least 6 trucks, and 3 marshals went tearing through Broadlands/Claiborne westbound towards Clydes and up that hill before I couldn't see them anymore. Anyone know what was going on?

At least eight vehicles all stopped at Clydes which was evacuated. One or two blocked the LCPS parking lot. A hook and ladder placed his ladder over one of the buildings and a lot of firemen were inspecting the roofs, second floor, and porch with a lot of equipments including remote IR sensors. looked to be a false alarm. We got cold and bored and left so unsure as to the resolution. Wonder if everyone got a free dinner?

Was just a single alarm call, but since its a commercial structure, you get another ladder truck and an engine.

Ended up being a mulch fire that the smoke got sucked up into the air intake system out front so there was smoke in the structure. There was very little extension of fire.

Smokers are ticking time bombs for us and themselves. Time to end it in all public places.

Smoke Causes Alarm, No Harm At Clydes

A tossed cigarette outside Clyde's Willow Creek Farm restaurant in Broadlands Saturday apparently ignited some mulch that sent the smell of smoke into the restaurant's lobby. Six fire companies responded, said Loudoun County Fire spokeswoman Mary Maguire.

No fire damage occurred to the interior of the building, Maguire said. The "mulch fire" only impacted the exterior, she said, and the fire companies were done within the hour.

Companies from Ashburn, Moorefield, Arcola, Dulles, Sterling and Fairfax responded to the restaurant at 9:42 p.m. March 31, she said today.

Clyde Manager Paul McGuinness, who wasn't on duty Saturday, said he was told that the building was evacuated briefly. He attributed the smoke to a cigarette.

It is ridiculous! How many lives are lost and how much money is spent every year related to cigarette/cigar fires.

Far too many people absent-mindedly toss their lit butts as if they were spitting out a piece of gum.

I think tougher laws should be in place and enforced! We have laws for drinking and driving because it is dangerous to do so. It is also dangerous to casually cast aside a lit cigaratte butt.

ONE stupid cigarette took up time/equipment/personnel from six different fire houses. That's awful. I hope the idiot who caused this knows it, feels terrible, and cleans up his/her act.

I don't understand why smoke butts aren't considered litter!

The amount of butts around the world just thrown on the ground alone must be mind boggling

I was in this absolutely beautiful night club in Athens Greece on the Mediterranean several years ago. As the evening wore on the hardwood floors had to have been totally covered with cigarette butts. It looked disgusting and it was a small wonder the place did not burn down.

I guess my point is no matter where you are many people that smoke just don't care, if they did they would not leave this mess where ever they are.. Smoking is an international problem not just here. I have seen several of my relatives die a painful horrible death from smoking now my sister has cancer from smoking and still will not quit and she is not that old. What gives??? I smoked for two years in my early twenties and had no problem quiting and never had a desire since to smoke. It actually disgusts me and it makes people look very unattractive. Notice how smokers always blow the smoke away from themselves.

I agree, time to get the tar & feathers for a public humiliation -- it is ashame that people do not understand smoke = fire = don't throw into mulch (or on grass, leaves etc)...

I live in an end unit townhome next to a small parking area. You can't believe how many smokers just flip them onto my lawn when walking to/from their cars. I not only have to rake leaves, but rake up the cigarette butts too!

As a smoker myself(let the flogging begin) I think it is shameful that someone throws their butts on the ground after smoking. I just pop the hot cherry off, make sure it is extenguished and stick the unburnt butt into my pocket. My pockets end up smelling like stale cigarettes but that is what I get for being a smoker.

FWIW, After the ban on smoking inside any public places in both MD areas and NYC reports of cigarette related fires have gone way up, assaults outside of bars/clubs have almost tripled and noise complaints are up through the roof. Guess someone either ban all smoking.
