I can't stand my dial-up service anymore, and for many, many reasons I will not use Adelphia's cable internet service. So, I'm ready to take the plunge with Verolan. I don't know which level of service would be sufficient for my needs. I'm hoping one of our more technical neighbors will be able to help me get the right type of service.

I use my internet service every day for a few hours. I download software and patches, music, scanned documents, and the like; I probably average about 20-30mb of traffic a day. I telecommute, on average, once or twice a month (obviously more traffic those days).

I'm guessing that the top tier (Home Connect Advantage -- 1024/384) is much more than I need, but I don't know if Home Connect Basic (384/128) or Plus (512/192) is better for my use. I don't think I'd use the FTP space, and 5 email boxes should be more than enough.

    Thanks!

Im with you on the Adelphia, they pretty much stink. Which is why a lot of us were very happy when Verolan started up in the area.
As far as which service to get with Verolan, it is pretty much limited by your requirements and budget. If you're used to dial-up, anything will be better...:D. I would recommend to start at the 384/128 and see how you like it, I dont think you'll have any problems and will enjoy the speed increase. You can always upgrade your account w/Verolan and Khalil (verolan) can upgrade it remotely and almost instantly when you are ready to upgrade.
If you end up being a "hardcore" user like myself and I know a few others too, you may want to upgrade to the 1024/384 service. We use it all the time for servers and what-not. Keep in mind that every ISP WILL have connectivity issues, but its how they deal with it that is important. With that said, I think Verolan truly wants to keep their customers happy. Im much happier w/Verolan than with Adelphia, not to mention dial-up.....Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for your input, Dwarflord! I just placed an order for the 512K service -- I decided that I'd see how that worked for me. Maybe I can convince my employer to allow me to work from home more often this way!

I was reading your reply and I am also fed up with Adelphia's service and capabilities. I was curious what your install costs were, I read on their web site it is $399. I also found older posts on this site that claimed it was $299. Any additional information on Verolan would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I don't know yet. Khalil and I have been playing telephone tag. He wants to come out to do a survey and a signal test to see if I'll get a decent signal. I doubt that will happen before January simply because I don't have any more vacation days this year!

I'll post an update when I've got the install costs, etc.

I have recently had the Verolan service installed. I have only had it for a short period of time though so far it has been disapointing. I am actually considering keeping my Powerlink connection on in case speeds do not get better.

Upload speeds seem to be good though downloads are dreadful. I have emailed them and am hoping to hear from them on Monday.

    2004-01-04 00:15:15 EST: 51 / 351
Your download speed : 51588 bps, or 51 kbps.
    A 6.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 351957 bps, or 351 kbps

    2004-01-04 00:44:31 EST: 45 / 98
Your download speed : 45813 bps, or 45 kbps.
    A 5.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 98376 bps, or 98 kbps.

Anyone else have similar issues with Verolan?

I got an email from Khalil the day after I submitted the request for information (12/9, I think). I called him the next morning, and he was unfamiliar with my request. I gave him my information again, and he told me that someone would be out to do a site survey. I haven't heard anything since then.

Given the recent trend in the performance of the Verolan service, I think I'm going to forget this option. Too many problems. Against my better judgment, I've signed up for Adelphi again. I only hope that it has improved in the last 2 years.

I did some bandwidth tests yesterday on my Adelphia cable modem and the speeds are pretty good. (download/upload) 1136/238, 1195/241. The main problem I have with them is when it is down, it is usually down for a week or so with no notice and no reason why. Also they will not allow you to run any servers on their equipment.

Ya, Verolan has gone downhill in a quick way. Dont know what is happening over there, but service is bad and theyve had severe network problems. I too have had to go back to adelphia. Its now better and now more cost effective. G/L

Lemme beg to differ here. I switched from Adelphia back in the summer because of the unbelievably unreliable connections and the "don't give a damn" attitude of their customer dis-service department. Verolan isn't for everybody, but they have been second to none as far as service is concerned. They've had to come out a few times for different issues, but Khalil has always provided me with great service. He was even up on my roof the day of Hurricane Isabel changing my bridge. I wanted a broadband connection that was going to always be there and in that respect Verolan has been a solid choice. But, if I become deranged and want to go back to rolling the dice every time I sign on and get treated like I'm a nuisance by people who don't care, I'll go back to Adelphia.

I will update on how my issue is resolved. I did get a similar run around with Verolan as described in this thread by section84. I am really hoping they respond accordingly though for the time being I am stuck with two sub par internet connections.
