Air Duct Cleaning...is it worth it? Our house is over 10 years old and the ducts have never been cleaned. I've noticed quite a bit of dust lately and my allergies have been acting up. Could the dust be coming from the air ducts? Has anyone had theirs cleaned and did it help? Input appreciated!

You read my mind. I'd love to hear people's recommendations on who to use. Bonus if they do dryer vent cleaning too (the company that we used for these services is out of business darnit!)

Absolutely you need thos ducts cleaned. After 5-6 years in our previuos house we couldn't believe the stuff that came out!

I know the man who came was named John and he always has an ad in those mass mailed envelopes. Check them out the next time you get them. Usually it is a picture of him kneeling on the florr with a pile of mess from the cleaning. He is very professional, too. and the cost is only about $150.

Yes, I would also recommend getting your air ducts cleaned. We periodically (every 3-5 years) clean our air ducts. Even though we have all wood floors and no carpet in our home that we built several years ago; we still like to make sure that the ducts are clean.

See my 03/24/07 posts under "Humidifier" under Homeowners Corner Thread for information regarding our HVAC contractor.

Our new home was built "tight but with breathing room" for the house to "breathe" and we still have the ducts cleaned to keep dust mites and other problems "at bay". We still use Bowman's Heating and Air in Sterling, VA since we used them at our former home in Eastern Loudoun County. We live beyond Leesburg now and still use them.

Well worth the cost. Also, the company can inspect your duct work and see if initially your HVAC was installed properly, etc. Their service call fee is around $295-$350. Online coupon offers now are for $295. We feel they are fair and very clean contractors. Web site is below--they also do plumbing work.

    www.bowmanheating.com (Bowman's Heating & Air site.)

    Good luck--

I think consumer reports had an article on this a few years back. If memory serves, they said air duct cleaning is not necessary as routine maintenance unless someone in your home has asthma and/or severe allergies.

I think Washington Checkbook had a similar recommendation as well.
