gunzour, don't forget that as college kids have gone back to school and that as staff have a chance to get experience around the area, the really good staff will start going to where the money is... like Clydes, or places that are more consistently busy for tips. AF has many high-school age kids there so life has not taught them the meaning of "customer service" yet...

Just my 2 cents worth. But I think AF will continue to struggle with keeping good staff. But we LOVE the Flatbread!

Clarification of our call in "to go" policy at American Flatbread Ashburn Hearth:

Thank you to everyone for your feedback on our "to go" policy. American Flatbread Ashburn Hearth will continue to offer call-in "to go" service each evening at our Ashburn Hearth location. In order to ensure each customer receives the highest quality experience we may periodically suspend taking call in orders. This is to ensure that on evenings when the volume of to go orders is high we are not compromising the experience of our dining room guests. We value each customer and do not wish to provide an unpleaseant experience (extended wait times)for our dining room guests or our loyal "to go" customers. Again, thanks for your pateince and continued support.

have you seen the oven Lee? It is a work of art really, and quite large in overall size. And not to mention the huge cost of installation and ongoing operating cost. It is extremely dis-proportionate to what you might call a "regular" oven.

Go take a look at the picture of the oven construction - absolutely amazing to see all the people involved and the process. The pictures were on the wall in the back last time I saw.

Next time you go to Anothai take a peek inside. It is a hand made adobe-type (for lack of what it truly is) brick oven. It is quite impressive!

I have to admit I have never been in AF everytime I think I am going there I end up in Anothai :)

Now you got me extremely curious about the oven. Sounds awesome!!!!!! Now from what you all said here it looks like adding an oven is no simple task.

AF here I come to see you soon :):):)

we went for the first time on Halloween. gorgeous oven- i LOVE the warm and welcoming atmosphere at AF! the pizza was delicious- my 9 yr old devoured the VA sausage flatbread. The one with olives, goat cheese and roasted red peppers (Delirium...?)... I wish I had order a good Shiraz to pair with it- SO unique and tasty. service: friendly, prompt, delightful. enjoyed the experience- 4 of 5 stars!

now for the bad news: no WAY should 2 flatbread pizzas and 3 alcohol-free drinks cost close to $50.00- ANYWHERE in the civilized world. while i recognize the quality of the ingredients, spices and dough as superior and organic, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal... i've enjoyed lower quality ingredients at half the price- JUST as much. Taco Bell's new taquitos give me a similar euphoric reaction!!! :) as far as health-ful-ness of a meal goes- when i want to eat healthy- i make it myself. i totally get WHY the price is high, and wouldn't change a THING about the quality of their ingredients since that's important to AF. sadly- i can't see myself regularly dropping that kind of ca$h on pizza, no matter how healthy or tasty it is.

that said- check it out if you haven't already- it's really wonderful- and REAL- food.

Could be worse.. you could be in Oslo where ONE large pizza (about the style of Pizza Hut) would cost you $37.70 just for the pizza :) A 1.5L of coke to go with it would run you another $7.20

Oh and for you drinkers... get ready to shell out $10.40 for a .4L of beer.. not a cheap place to party :)

:) before the dollar plunge it was still bad.. has gone from about 6.3 to 5.4 conversion rate in the last year+ :)

That's about the right conversion for just about everything there :D

I agree, it's become one of our favorites. We generally get a half whatever the special is for the day and the other half the punctuated equilibrium. Very yummy.

I just called at 5:05pm, didn't realize there was this rule--couldn't imagine a new business publicly admitting they would turn down business. But they took my call in! I hope they continue too, w 5 kids under 9 and lots of running around, we need that flexibility. Although the idea of ordering there and downing a few Dogfish darks is not the worst thing in the world. It's just the optics given most restaraunts fail in the first year. We can't lose such a unique eatery.

Speaking of location, location, location...don't you all remember the grocery store debate? I'll bet you $1,000,000 that you can find more expensive pizzas...errr flatbreads...in locales closer to or in the swankier DC Neighborhoods!

Big difference tho in that AFB uses fresh, HEALTH(ier) ingredients.

riiight. but this IMMEDIATE area has too many other economical good quality choices for AFB to be filled every night with patrons.

I love and respect the concept and DO want to support local farmers, and CAN tell the diff in quality in their ingredients. their food is really delicious. i GET why the price is higher. but i don't think the subtle differences in taste are enough to make most people pay that much more for a flatbread.
