    SAVE THE DATE
ANNUAL MEETING TO BE HELD AT MILL RUN ELEMENTARY
    ON MAY 8th
Please keep an eye on your mailbox for the official notification of the Annual Meeting of Broadlands Association, Inc. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, in the Gymnasium at Mill Run Elementary School, located at 42940 Ridgeway Drive. The doors open at 6:30 PM for the purpose of registering a quorum. The agenda begins at 7:00 PM.
As part of the meeting, an election will be held to select three (3) members to three-year terms ending in May 2015. It is not too late to run for a position. Complete and return the Nominating Petition/Candidate Profile Sheet found on page 13 of the April newsletter to the HOA office no later than April 20, 2012 to be included in the Annual Meeting mailing. To take advantage of having your profile sheet included in the May newsletter please submit it by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.
Whether or not you are able to attend, you are strongly encouraged to complete the Proxy Form which you will receive in the mail so that a quorum may be obtained. Proxy forms are also available at the HOA office.
You can change your proxy at any time before the meeting, or you can rescind it and vote at the meeting. You should sign your Proxy as directed, naming another owner, or, in the case of a non-resident Owner, the Lessee of such Owner’s home, or the General Manager (instructed proxies only). If you do not have a person in mind to designate as your proxy, you may assign it to the Secretary of the Broadlands Board of Directors. This will allow a quorum to be established so the meeting can run on time.
A return envelope will be enclosed for your convenience, and it is essential that we receive your proxy vote no later than 5:00 PM on May 8, 2012.
We thank you for your assistance and cooperation. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting!

So here's a lesson for anyone who decided to volunteer to run for the BHOA. Don't piss off Van Metre. In 14 years they have never used their 3,000 votes, until tonight.
    Vote Count:
    Erika Cotti 187
    Dawn Holtz 181
    Stevens Miller >100
But Van Metre used their 3,000 votes so to ensure I would not serve on the Broadlands HOA, even though the Community voted that that they wanted me to serve.

And how many votes did Gerry have?

How is it that Van Metre still has 3,000 votes? Do they still maintain one vote per home even after that home has been sold?

Thank you for volunteering to serve.

What is also a shame is that only ~300 households voted in a community the size of Broadlands.

I thought the board had been turned over to the homeowners??? I really don't understand how this can happen. It is awful. What is the point of even having an election??

How pathetic...probably the same reason we have idgits sitting on the county board. :shakehead:

Seriously, how does this election even work? I would really like to know the details; I think others would too. Can anyone provide clarification? Thanks.

    Hi,

I want to thank past, current, and future board members and committee volunteers for their service. I was glad to be a part of the group of homeowners present tonight!

I also wanted to express a few suggestions, IMO, that might help with the efficiency of future board meetings:

-Perhaps representatives of companies such as Patriot and the pool maintenance firm could be introduced and given the opportunity to speak/answer questions at the beginning of the meeting as a courtesy to them; it doesn’t seem that they need to hang around while we discuss issues unrelated to their business functions.

-Perhaps one representative could publicly thank, on behalf of the entire board, those members who have served who are moving on to new adventures. Having each board member publicly thank each of those people individually is repetitive and unnecessarily time consuming.

-Perhaps committees for which no representative is present could prepare a quick summary of their committees’ activities (for a board member or other volunteer to read) so that we are not left with “Is there anyone from X committee here to present? No? Then we are moving on to …”

-Perhaps the various committees could come up with specific examples of volunteer functions and time commitments and post this information on the website. More people may want to volunteer but want more information about what they could be getting into first.

-Perhaps an online “comment box” could be set up in advance of the meeting so that residents could bring up questions and issues of concern in advance (if possible; obviously some issues come up during the meeting) so that the board could determine and plan a response to topics of broad interest (such as whether to bring the metro to Loudoun).

-When a heated topic comes up (such as whether the board is “doing enough” to bring the metro to Loudoun), perhaps the topic shouldn’t be shut down as quickly as it was tonight. (It didn’t seem that we really needed to “move on,” since the meeting was running ahead of schedule.)

-If we all remembered to use a courteous tone, perhaps there would be less of an inclination for the moderators of the meeting to shut down a heated topic. J It’s okay to disagree, but best to choose our words to respond politely.

Do any neighbors have any other suggestions?

Thank you, and I hope to see you at future community events soon!

The turnover you mention is the point where there were a majority of BoD seats that were put in by voting instead of developer appointed without an election. Van Meter is not off the board or out of the HOA - just that they no longer appoint a majority of the board.

Gerry received less than 100 votes (I think the exact number was 87).

Van Metre cast their 3, 026 votes for Stevens, Dawn and Gerry. It certainly appears last night's election was rigged by Van Metre. And I'll take it as a compliment, that even though the residents voted for me (in a landslide), that Van Metre was forced to cast their "controlling vote". Broadlands HOA is not in control of resident, since the developer can pull a stunt like this.

Sad..... Seems like almost every election or political party is ignoring the people they are representing and ensuring their own agenda...

We don't have to look any further than the current Openband situation or to our local HOA to see its not about what the people want......

I sure hope you are talking with the press. This "rigging" needs exposure.

I agree it's BS from a common sense point of view, but it's pretty easy to defend in the media if you're VM. They acted within their rights and can claim "they chose the candidates that will best serve the property they still have to sell" or something like that. They can just claim that their hatred for Erika over trying to kill their golden goose didn't factor in to their decision and no one can prove otherwise.

I think most people generally regard HOAs poorly so this won't be a shock in a newspaper.

Broadlands HOA (or Southern Walk HOA?) not about what the people want? Care to elaborate?
