Has anyone planted asparagus roots in their garden? Where can I find 3 year roots? I find I spend so much at Wegmans on this veggie, why not grow my own??

    WeLoveDisney and others--

I saw your post about 3 year roots for asparagus. We grow heirloom varieties of asparagus. You might check out my post called "Gardening Gurus..." under the "Nature/Habitat/Garden Corner..." thread.

    R. H. Shumway is an excellent source all varieties of produce. You can only order asparagus roots from them from March 15 through May 15. We use them for our gardens. If you still need more info--PM me. Web site is
    below--

    WeLoveDisney--

Thanks. Glad to have been of help. If you need any "tips" (not asparagus:happygrin::)), let me know.

    Happy gardening--

    Foodie

P.S. We grow alot of different varieties of veggies; and I can offer other garden tips if needed for fruit trees, grape vineyards, and produce.

OK Foodie, you are one of my favorite posters here on BHOAF, and if anyone knows the answer to this you will. Why does your pee smell funny the day after eating asparagus?

    Hi, afgm and others--

Since I was already up early this AM with a sick twin and my laryngitis, I decided to get online and saw your question about urine smells when you eat asparagus. Here is the short answer below and some interesting web site info--

www.asparagus.com/maab/faq.html (Michigan's Asparagus Advisory Board site and great info on all aspects concerning asparagus.)

www.student.bmj.com/back_issues/0800/education/277.html (British Medical Journal's site and info. Great resource.)

Short answer is--when you eat asparagus your body produces a digestive enzyme that breaks down into various amino acids. One compound that is found is a sulfur compound called "methyl mercaptan". This mercaptan compound is also found in rotten egg smells, garlic, onions, and skunk secretations for that noxious smell. :eww:

Asparagus is part of the Lily family as are leeks and garlic. Some British Medical Journal studies have shown that some people have a gene for the enzyme compound called "methyl mercaptan" that when it breaks down the "smell" is released through their urine. Not everyone has this sensitive smell. Asparagus is also very high in folic acid and is great for pregnant women. It has more folic acid than any other vegetable.

    Hope this answers your questions.:)
