Are there any birders out there who use platform feeders? Are they mounted on a pole or on the ground? With a baffle? Would like to know what your overall experience has been attracting ground feeding birds like Cardinals, Cat Birds, Thrashers, etc.? Thank you.

we use a flat feeder that mounts to the railing of our deck. It works very well. The mesh bottom allows water to drain away and it attracts both birds and other critters quite nicely.

I am not that much of a birder to be able to identify the different species. We got our flat feeder from wild bird world in Chantilly.

I use two different feeders, one for the normal song birds and one for the finches. For the ground feeds, I just spread seed on the ground. I've gotten at least 20 different types of birds. Oh and peanuts. The bluejays love them.

We have a small bird feeding dish that I have sitting on a rock in the backyard. I've seen cardinals on it pretty often. Larger birds eat off of it too and will sometimes knock it to the ground. We had it caulked to the rock for a while but the winter weather undid that.

I don't mind them, until they ate all the peanuts I left out for the squirlls. The crows are big and scare my cats, which gives me a chuckle.

That's funny! They scare my cat, also. It seems that the crows get bigger every year. I don't remember them being so huge.

I have yet to see a chipmunk in our yard.

I have a platform feeder that hangs. I also have a thistle feeder and a black sunflower feeder hanging. I see cardinals mostly at the hanging black sunflower oil feeder, or on the ground. Occasionally on the platform feeder, but not always.
