Thank you for the overwhelming response to our call for certified backyards. We are just a few houses away from having enough houses to be a certified community.
What we need now is more "points". We get these points by certifying more homes, common areas and schools. Schools and common areas give us the most points. So if you know of a church, school, business, park, or anywhere else in Broadlands that has all the elements necessary to become certified, let us know. Water is the hardest element to find, so any areas with creeks, wetlands or ponds are the best.
    Thanks for all your help.

    Habitat Team,
Did you already certify the interesting wetlands [edited to: at Demott Dr/Moorview Pkwy intersection] next to the new Broadlands Harris Teeter shopping center?

A couple months ago, I had to stop the car, get a turtle (it looked like a Spotted Turtle) wandering the middle of the road and had to put it back into the wetlands. Another time, saw a red fox wandering up and down the banks. There's plenty of wildlife to see there.

    Thanks for the info.
We just turned in the certification papers for one site in that area (the site across the street with the pond ). For the commercial areas, we need to get the owners of the business to agree to certified. That will be our next step. Keep sending your ideas-the community is a big help!

How about the large pond area that is owned by Van Metre Commercial Property Association that is to the east of Clyde's.
For anyone that hasn't been back there, there are paved trails that go by the pond and up to the old barns.

What about Saint Theresa’s? It might make a good project for one of the Scout troops or a classroom when school starts.

Cliff, where do the trails start? I walk on Broadlands Blvd. almost every morning, though on the other side of the street. Didn't even realize those were there! (note to self...try walking after coffee...not before!)

They are immediately to the right (east) of Clyde's. One trail is a small loop and the second one goes back past the pond and up to the old barns. It also connects to the far eastern end of the School Admin parking lot.

Those paths are wonderful and the pond has a ton of turtles and fish. We have seen a lot of different animals walking around, it's great.
