I could've sworn I spotted a bald eagle flying over Truro Parish this morning. It was huge, with a distinctive white head. I almost drove off the road I was so excited! Anyone else see it? Please tell me I'm not hallucinating...

I've seen them along the Potomac in Leesburg, so there may very well be some here as well. Send an email to our naturalist Julie Gurnee...I'm sure she can give you more accurate infor on identification.

yes, they live and thrive all over this area and you may remember one making the news recently at the wilson Bridge. It was injured and saved by the workers (but later died in a fight with another bird).

Do they make a screaming noise? We've got a screaming / screaching creature behind overland park. Its not bad, but the dog sorta gets wigged out with it, and it is eerie hearing a sound that is similar to a young girl screaming in the middle of the night.

merky - what you are hearing is a Screech Owl. They can sometimes sound like a girl or woman being attacked, it can be really freaky. They are somewhat territorial and may hang out in an area for a while, but do usually move on and stop making the noise. Nothing to worry about of course, other than dealing with the sound. I almost called the police one night, years ago in Falls Church, I was convinced it was a woman in danger... but then we heard it moving in the trees and figured out what it was...

YES!!!!!! I had two in my backyard ripping apart a squirel. I don't know what I was more excited about having two bald eagles in my yard or the fact that they were eating one of a trillion squirels I have in my yard.

I watched it for about 1/2 hour through high-powered binoculars and it was definately a Bald Eagle. No doubt about it!!

I took some pictures of them but they came out looking like the bigfoot pictures of the 1970's. Not great.....

I'm glad someone else is as excited about this sighting as I am. I haven't been this excited about wildlife in Broadlands since the 5-toed skink of last summer!!!

Forgot to add this: Merky1 could it be a fox you are hearing at night? They sound pretty hair-raising, too. We had one in our backyard a few weeks ago and it literally woke me out of a sound sleep. With the weather turning cold I bet it was out on the prowl.

    Just a thought.

there are certainly Foxes all over this place... not easily seen though during the day as they like evenings better. You should look around the edges of Broadlands, go for walks in the summer early evening and you stand a good chance to see one. And the deer are quite plentiful in Broadlands as well. I have had them within 10 feet on many an afternoon/evening. Not at my house specifically, but at a friends house further up Claiborne at the end of Southern Walk.

I am over by Chickacoan. The eagles were in the trees back by the trail--Boulder Glen is what I think the trail is.

I plan on putting on a All-you-can-eat squirrel buffet tomorrow to get the eagles to come back:D

    Ummmmm, squirrel...

That's funny - my mother-in-law from TN thought for sure we didn't have squirrels around here. Must be b/c we're in a TH without trees in our backyard, so she thought they just didn't exist in NoVA....

    :hijack: (my bad)
