Just noticed that Bear Rock Cafe is not listed on the site plan for the Southern Walk Retail Center. Has anyone confirmed it is out? Too bad - we had one in Charlotte - I was really looking forward to it. Instead I see we are getting a Domino's - just what we need, another pizza joint!!

But I don't believe the domino's is replacing Bear Rock. I heard they were actually in talks with someone that could be considered better than Bear Rock. Don't know any more details.

    A bit off topic, but....

With all of the foodstores & eatries wround, the Greater Ashburn Area must be the best fed area in the country! But I wonder how much of it goes to waste? You know that Giant/Safeway/Teeter/Wegmanns can't possibly move all of the fresh stuff to keep it from spoiling.

I wholeheartedly agree!!!! Although I would settle for Dunkin Donuts to open anywhere in Ashburn at this point I am so tired of going to Leesburg and Sterling. On a related note... did anyone else notice that it looks like the DD pad by Sunoco has water and sewer now??

Hey Gang - My name is Ty Hausch. I'm a Southern Walk resident and oversee the leasing and management of the Broadlands Southern Walk Village Center (soon to be renamed to Broadlands Marketplace). Feel free to email me directly at thausch@vanmetrecompanies.com if you need info direct from the source, or if you have suggestions about retailers you would like to see (Nordstroms is not an option) or if you have tenant referrals. I'd rather you not send emails complaining about a restaurant's food, but I will read the forums to check the pulse of the community.

The local franchisees of Bear Rock Cafe did indeed back out of their lease. They have 2 other locations (Arlington and Shirlington), and apparently they expanded a little too quickly. They are first-time restaurant operators, and my guess is that they weren't prepared for the grind of owning and operating restaurants.

I thought I had a deal with First Watch Cafe (Worldgate is the closest) but they pulled out of that deal as well. So I'm reduced to splitting the space, and I'm close to having a deal with Starbucks for a portion of it. Coffee connoisseurs I'm sure will not be happy, but anyway that has to weave their way through the Safeway center in the morning should be pleased. Besides, Caribou is not doing new deals.

Also, I was negotiating a lease with the local Dunkin'/Baskin' franchisees for the pad next to Glory Days and they pulled out as well a couple of months ago despite saying that they wanted both locations in Broadlands. So now I'm working on a bank deal - not sexy, but given the parking problems in that lot, I don't think another restaurant was feasible anyway.

Everyone has their favorite restaurants, but I constantly get feedback from retailers that there is not enough daytime lunch traffic. So bear in mind that I am somewhat limited in the retailers and restaurants that I can attract. But keep the feedback coming. I've got 3 small children, so I'm pretty thick-skinned!

    Ty

    Thanks, Ty.

That pad site would be a perfect spot for a Roy Rogers, Baja Fresh, or Arby's. Just my $.02 :D

For most restaurants to survive in this area I would think a good lunchtime crowd is essential. Southern Walk is not far from Verizon, but going from AOL or beyond is a bit of a stretch for a quick lunch break with so many choices close by (Restaurants by the Hotels, existing and soon to be restaurants at Ryan Park Center and in front of Bloom, Wegman's and what is coming over there, just to name some places).

I would like to see either a Chik-Fil-A or a Sonic in the pad spot if it can support the parking.

I would love to see a good breakfast place. We have a lot of lunch and dinner places but Ashburn is pretty shy on breakfasts. I'd prefer a sit-down place but a good bagel/muffin place would be good, too. I hope it doesn't come down to having yet another Starbucks.

Ben and Jerry's would be good, too!

Yep, there was a great place in Manhattan Beach, CA called the local yolk! Fabulous breakfasts, with a sort of "been there, done that" casual atmosphere. I guess they did other meals to, but we just frequented them in the am when visiting out there last Christmas
