Yep, we left our garage door open accidentally (Saturday night), and they took all the beer out of the mini frig.

BUT, they are getting bolder....they went into my purse, took all the cash, and the gift cards I have gotten for my baby. I don't see any missing credit cards, but it seems to me as if they are getting bolder and bolder.

Now, the gift cards... why would any teenager want a Babies R Us card? Here's the deal, if any parents out there notice that their kids have stuff, all of a sudden...it's time to confront those kids. Not that you would, but it's the right thing to do. Just FYI, the other items taken were a San Vito card, Barnes and Noble, Toys R Us, Starbucks, to name a few.

It's a shame, apparently this isn't the neighborhood we thought it was.

So not only was the garage open all night but you left your purse in the garage? Or did the thief enter the house too?

They came in. We keep the door unlocked assuming the garage door is locked. My purse USED to be just inside.

Gotcha. Entering the house would bother me a lot more than just the garage. Certainly either is alarming and a gives a sense of being violated however I know if I caught someone in my opened-door garage my reaction would be a lot different than if I caught someone inside my house. If you are correct and this is the work of teens, then I hope they can learn their lesson without walking into the wrong house.

Just figured it all out, we are still trying to learn what's missing. One of the items, I'm sure they used to transport the beer, is very distinctive. So once we get a handle on all that's missing, yes, we will file a police report!!

One more thing, if the other people whose beer has been stolen filed a report....did any good come from it? I'm certain there are fingerprints everywhere, but Loudoun County ain't no CSI!!!

If you don't mind - what area are you in? Southern Walk? Broadlands North? South?

Southern Walk. There was a unique Backpack also stolen, presumably to carry the goods. I'm going to search the net to get a photo of it if I can. If they didn't toss it, this will be a good indicator of whodunit.

I'd be careful about giving away any investigative clues. You never know who's reading this.

This type of activity is common and has been going on here for years.

what kind of neighborhood DOESN'T have petty crime? just curious...

i know it was accidental leaving the garage door open but---

regardless of where you live you HAVE to be smart about protecting valuables... i admit growing up in Nebraska we left our front door unlocked but we had 2 huge dogs. we left our car unlocked but there was never anything of value in it. i think we have a responsibility not to MAKE ourselves easy targets...

You should report it to the police immediately. Don't wait until you know what's missing.

When this happened to someone on our street several years back we bought one of these Skylink Garage Door Alert - GM318 (check target.com and other online retailers). It was fairly simple to install, and we have the device in our entry so we can see it every night on the way to bed. It has an audible alert as well, which we found annoying, but perhaps this can give you some peace of mind.

Yes, I agree we were an easy target that night. Very rare that our door gets left open, but it happened. And we did have a big dog until a month ago, and he kicked it. He slept downstairs also, so he would have alerted us. I can't imagine that 12 beer bottles in a bag is at all quiet. It's the wallet in the house thing that's freaking me out. They also got some nice sunglasses as a residual gift, also in the bag. Nice haul, if you are reading this...Cowards!! I'll keep my eye on Craig's list. Didn't think anyone would buy that stuff, how could you trust it? That's rhetorical of course. Thanks for the pointers everyone. Keep those doors locked!!

You need to file a police report IMMEDIATELY. You don't need to know everything that was taken; you can have an officer add that to the report later.

Forgot to mention that the police were here an hour ago. These are small items that they took, so I presume they'll be for sale on Craig's list soon, or at the pawn shop, if there is one.
