you're the first one on this thread to point out the obvious. THey were asking to be robbed. Any crime in Broadlands is going to be a crime of opportunity. If the garage door was closed, they'd still be sipping brewskis now. Be safe, don't leave your stuff out in the open and it won't get stolen

    Teenagers are so silly.

It's okay to take something that's not secured. In fact, I would be doing a disservice by NOT taking someone elses property that's not secured. Because, if they really wanted to KEEP their property, they would have secured it. So, really, they don't want their property any more, so it's kind of like trash. Instead of letting the landfills fill up, I'll do them a service by taking their property from them.

Oh, and if they leave their car doors open, that just means that they really don't want anything they might have left in their car. Duh-anyone can see that.....

Oops. The door was open so I thought it was a garage sale with free stuff. Sorry.

Sarcasm aside, according to your logic, it would be morally wrong to clean litter and used cigarette butts off the sidewalk. and to villager, i didn't say what you imply at all. I never said it was right, I said that the homeowner created the opportunity.

I was just making a joke, not trying to be contrary to your comments. I completely agree with not creating opportunities for criminals. My garage doors stay closed when not in use.

Bad analogy; the sidewalk is public property, a person's garage or car isn't...

oh come on, if your kid left his bike on the sidewalk and I took it, it would be justified because it was on public property? There are vids on youtube about cops who run stings on bike thieves, they leave a bike in the open and arrest the guy when he rides off with it.

bobgaggle, I wish the 18/19 year olds who hang out across the street from me were as responsible as you seem to be. They throw their trash in the street, hang around smoking, drive through the one kid's own yard with their cars, and generally create an atmosphere of rebels without a clue.

but i'm sure when they get an apartment and have to pay bills and keep the checkbook balanced, they'll straighten right out.

The Sheriffs Office used to (maybe still does) have a bait car with a video camera in it. I'll never forget, several years ago there was a would-be car thief. He stole the car and drove it down the toll road toward DC. On the way there I guess his bladder got a little, uh, full, so he used the only thing in the car suitable to act as a liquid proof container-an empty can. Well, he must have been more than a little wrecked and forgotten that he'd used this container to relieve himself because, not more than a few minutes later, he starts DRINKING from the can... HEHEHE! Anyway, he ends up pulling over and getting sick. All caught on tape... This was a little before the YouTube phenomena, but still hilariously funny!

Read your original comment; you asked if it should be considered 'morally wrong', not against the law. If your dog poops on a public sidewalk, that poop belongs to you. If I pick it up and dispose of it, I am entitled to that. Nobody will ever be able to arrest me for that. If your dog poops on someone's private property, I could go pickup that poop and dispose of it (which I would consider morally right), but in essence, I would be breaking the law in order to do so (trespassing).

I simply stated that your analogy was incorrect, since we are talking about taking someone's property from someone's private property. The litter or cigarette butts on a public street meet only half the 'requirements' of the original situation, thus the 'bad analogy'. Also, the cigarette butts/litter have very little 'intrinsic value', as opposed to the delicious porters and stouts I could be keeping cold in the fridge in my garage...

Bandits just struck at our house in Old Broadlands - our house. We had the garage door open for less than 1/2 and hour. Around 9pm. Cought and yelled and two took off running. Saw the back side only. Grey sweatshirt on tall guy and black on short guy. Dark pick up took off with no lights on.
