We've been to the one by the Sterling movie theatre. Looking for something closer to home, fun, kid friendly, good food for husbands bday this week. Any suggestions?

Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse in Ashburn Farms (next to the Giant). We go there for my birthday every year as well as one of son's birthdays.

We've been to Nagoya and Otani. They both have good food, but we found that Otani was a little cheaper for us. We usually order 2 entrees with fried rice, a shrimp tempura, and an extra order of fried rice. We pay over 70 at Nagoya, and we only paid 65 at Otani (after tip).

We went to Otani this weekend so I can now compare the two... While Otani is slightly cheaper, I think Nagoya has better food. The "fillet" at Otani wasn't as high quality as I've had at Nagoya. Both have huge portions. I can't comment on the sushi. Our chef was just as skilled and entertaining as we've experience at Nagoya but I did notice some less-so at other stations (i.e., how can you skip the onion volcano?). Given you're still looking a relatively non-cheap dining experience, I'd say go with Nagoya.

Speaking of huge portions, do any of these places allow you to "split" a meal?

We've tried all of them around here and Nagoya is the best in our opinion.

Nagoya is great. We love the sushi, just amazingly fresh and flavorsome. The tepanyaki grill side of the house is a little pricey.

We think Nagoya is the Best, as we have been going at least once evry other month. The owners actually remember us and always do something nice for the kids. We also feel that we nee to supoprt them, so they don't go out of business for the wrong reason.

Nothing wrong with a little competition for price and quality, but lack of customers due to another similar restaurant further away is not the right reason.

I.e. Michael Angelo, we went there yesterday and it was half full, the menu hasn't changed much from San Vito, but the other retaurants are hurting them.

but lack of customers because the competition is good too means that Nagoya may have to do something more to compete. i am all for loyalty- i am very loyal myself to businesses, but if another biz comes along and adds convenience to the quality i expect... then 2 places get my biz! :)

Also- Michelanglos is the same family, that's why the menu isn't much different. again- we can all do our part to support them, but they need to come with something original to compete as well...

It's certainly not Otani. The Host last night (Saturday) was the rudest person on earth. We waited 30 minutes for soup and another 20 for salad - despite having reservations we had to wait until our Latin Chef finished with the adjoining table. Family of four, two kids shrimp meals, one steak, one chicken, two large beers = $110 with tip. Good luck with that Otani. I wouldn't be posting if it wasn't for the creep host that tried to shoe us away (he had written our name down incorrectly when we called for resv, then agrued and eye rolled that we weren't who we claimed to be). I was ready to go to Nagoya or Bennihanna but the Mrs insisted on Otani. My steak was a cheap sirlion to boot!

    NEVER AGAIN :angryfire:

Nagoya is the best. They make you feel special when you come in- and are so friendly with the kids. It's our favorite!

We've been to Otani once and had a good experience. There were only a few other tables in use at the time and the service was good. We don't eat at Japanese Steakhouses very often and are far from Japanese food experts to be able to compare, but we were happy with Otani.

I need to keep better track for I had the opposit experience. I thought that Otani was more expensive than Nagoya.

Has anyone tried the Benihana down by the mall? I was so excited about one coming to our area but it was terrible.

Very expensive, food was not very good and the "theatrically prepared food" that made Benihana famous was totally lacking.

Anyone else had experiences (good or bad) at the new Benihana?

I did not like Benihana either. Food wasn't good. We were cramped into one of the tables (I was literally sitting at the corner of the table). And the cost was outrageous. I agree 100% with Ozgood.

I think Nagoya and Otani are both hit or miss, good but not memorable. The best one in my opinion is Sakura in Fair Lakes.

Nagoya - Otani is over priced and I see no "family" there. Benihana is a chain.

Time your arrival to Nagoya to be at the top of the hour, call ahead - they take reservations, and treat someone to a birthday there.
