I brought this up a year or so ago about no bike racks at the Broadlands (Safeway) shopping center. I believe there are still no bike racks up there and riders must lock them to the parking signs or somewhere on the sidewalks.

Also, I'm glad to see lots of residents riding their bikes to the new DDonuts - but, alas, no bike rack there that I could see.

Does the HOA have any pull with these commercial properties to get them to make our community a little more bike-friendly?

Commercial properties within Broadlands have their own 'HOA'. I'm sure if you give our HOA staff a call at the Nature Center, they would be glad to point you in the right direction.

Ever since my wagon was stolen from the Peoples Drugstore ('member that?) in Sterling MANY years ago I never leave anything unlocked. That was a traumatizing experience for me as a little girl.

I've been in touch with Dick Houser who is in charge of Saul Centers' VA properties. He planned on being at Broadlands Village Center on Monday and said he'd scope out locations for bike racks. I'll follow up with him this week.

On a sidenote: We biked to Reston Town Center (via W&OD Trail) this past weekend and they have bike racks in a number of places. This set of racks securely accommodated ~14(?) bikes in the space of a single car parking spot: http://immotionphoto.com/photos/620862932_hpp8V-L.jpg.

A rep from Saul was in last week to the HOA Board meeting and the Board brought up their lack of racks at that time to them also.

Mr. Houser [of Saul Centers] said they will be ordering four racks for the Broadlands Village Center. Two will go near the big planters at the corner with the fountain (at the intersection). One will be to the left of the Original Steakhouse. And another one will be near the Starbucks. They expect them to be installed in a few weeks. The locks will be bolted down and allow bikes to be secured to them.

They did look around for other locations but some prime spots were impossible. Wendy's controls their surrounding pad or something like that. And the area in front of Safeway is too busy with carts, etc.

The information above is what I have to the best of my understanding, and I am not affiliated with Saul in any way so don't go after them if any of this is wrong.
