There is a popular teen hang out spot on some large rocks on this trail- it's not far from the intersection of Gentle Heights and Vestals Gap. Another entrance to this trail is near Chickacoan and Songbird Court. I didn't mind hearing them hanging out since they weren't bothering US, but when I walked my dog there recently, it is riddled with beer cans, broken glass and other trash. Worst part is- there's a trash can not even 10 feet from them!

So this is an area that we may want to patrol regularly.

It's too bad- if I was a kid I'd want to hang back there too, but I would be smart enough not to leave EVIDENCE behind... :)

I've also heard firecrackers going off in there - and with all the dry underbrush, I'm just waiting for a fire to start. The kids always take off running after setting them off. So, by the time you call the Sheriff's office and they arrive, the kids are long gone.

I have visited both of those locations and have picked up beer cans, etc. I did inform the security patrol to start to visit those locations on a regular basis. I have also asked them to please bring thier dogs with them so the people who are using those areas as a drinking hang out will know we are not going to tolerate this type of behavior. However, since these security guys can't be everywhere when things are happening, please call the non emergency number to the sheriffs office and inform them what you are witnessing.

As for the fireworks, I don't know what the answer is other than call the police when you hear a group hanging out in the woods. If the kids run after setting them off but they see the police arrive, maybe this will start to deter them. It only takes once for them to get caught.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I was out walking on this trail and found two containers of Axe in the hangout area. OK maybe they just want to smell nice, but here is some disturbing information from prnewswire. I hope parents of teens will have a conversation with them - even if you're SURE your kids would never do this - somebody's kids ARE doing it. Huffing can kill you the first time or any time you try it.

Viral Video Warns AXE Users About the Dangers of Misuse

Video relays serious message about the consequences of "huffing"

CHICAGO, Ill., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- AXE, the brand well-known for
its lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek commercials, is warning consumers about
the dangers of misusing aerosol products.
To complement the brand's ongoing efforts to deter inhalant abuse, also
known as "huffing," AXE officials have posted a warning video to
http://www.theaxeeffect.com. While the message is serious - abusing
aerosols can injure or kill you - the execution is in line with what guys have come
to expect from the AXE brand.
"We want our consumers to understand that deliberately misusing AXE can
not only kill your game, but can actually kill you," said AXE Brand
Building Director Sam Chadha. "This video sends a message in the language
that our consumers understand - if you're not smart about the choices you
make and you don't use AXE properly, you're not going to get the girl." The
brand's warning comes as inhalant abuse-prevention groups join forces to
bring awareness to the dangers of aerosol misuse during National Inhalants
and Poisons Awareness Week, March 18-24.
AXE is currently in the process of producing a second video to address
the use of aerosols in conjunction with fire and plans to post that warning
    to http://www.theaxeeffect.com in coming weeks.
These videos are just the latest in a series of steps AXE and its
parent company Unilever have taken to combat huffing and overall product
misuse. AXE cans and the brand's Web site post clear warnings about misuse,
and Unilever supports both the Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE) and
the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition in their efforts to prevent
    inhalant abuse.
"We felt it was important to not only support these prevention groups
financially, but to offer our time and expertise in helping to fight
abuse," said Chadha. "That's why our head of Research and Development,
Peter Gallagher, sits on the ACE Board of Trustees. He's helped the
organization reach out to parents and teachers in every state, providing
guidance on inhalant-prevention program initiatives and public service
    announcements."
Unilever is working with ACE to send several members of its AXE team to
local school and community forums to further support the organization's
inhalant abuse-prevention efforts. In the meantime, the company urges
consumers to visit http://www.theaxeeffect.com to learn more about the dangers associated with aerosol misuse.

When I was in high school (years and years ago) a friend died from huffing butane. The "official" cause of death was a brain aneurysm but the amount of huffing he did was the most likely culprit.

That is so sad! What a tragedy. I was struck a few years back by an article in the Post about a preteen boy in this area who was found dead on the deck at his home after huffing propane. The friends and family quoted in the article thought he didn't do stuff like that.

When I used to visit a nursing home is Vienna, I was surprised to find out that some of the Nursing homes in our area have rooms that are dedicated to kids, when asked how they came to be a part of living here I was told because of huffing, 2 of the residents were brain dead and one was only 15. How sad...

Do you think working with the middle schools to educate the kids would be helpful or would it only inform kids of another way to get high?

They do have sheriff's deputies assigned to the middle schools (resource officers) that work to educate kids about drugs, etc.

D.A.R.E. officers, but do they tell them the harsh realities of what drugs can do, or just that they are bad and illegal?

Having raised two boys one in college and doing well and the other entering the real estate business.

Your kids become who their friends are and who they hang out.

Watch and see who your kids are hanging out with and believe the one kid who is the lowest common denominator in the group can influence the group of what would be good kids to do very very bad things. A friend of mine in the sheriffs dept is amazed how one bad kid can have influence over so many good kids as he sees this over and over. When they start to drive is when you lose a lot of control and influence and you pray for the best.
