Hahahahahahahahaha. You think we are a community? More like a dysfunctional nuclear family. I'd use this language to your face, a judge's face and to God (even though GASP! I don't go to church, go ahead and flame me). I didn't curse, use profanity or anything. You have no idea who you are talking to Scott. I've been through so much emotional trauma at an early age that anything these folks bring to this hospital will be a cake walk. Any sensitivity I had was beaten out of me long ago.

I fully think out my opinions and in fact I've been trained in debate and proofs. Even though you may not like what I say it usually needs to be said. You can take the PCness of the late 90's and through it out the window because I refuse to tiptoe around a subject because I may hurt someone's feelings, Wah!

Just b/c I'm not in a health care profession doesn't mean I am ignorant nor sheltered. Thanks for the suggestion on more schooling. I already have a couple of advanced degrees and what they don't cover the school of hard knocks did, so I'll pass, thanks. You seem like a nice guy but don't preach to me. For more colorful antics please see the remainder of my posts. Enjoy.

So then, what you are saying is that a hospital with a mental / emotional treatment ward should be fairly inconsequential to our neighborhood, from your perspective? And some have asserted that those in mental facilities are dangerous. If thats true, and juxtaposed to what you are saying...it would seem you would present more of a danger than those seeking treatment. But I dont buy that. I think you are funny. Colorful. A good character to have around, but not dangerous. And you're right, I dont know who I am talking to...your right to privacy is protected, but as I said earlier, I would love to further this at the pub. Hope to see ya there.

Me, I'm mostly harmless (100pts to anyone how can pinpoint that quote) What I'm saying is that I have experience with mental illness and I know first hand how dangerous these people with seemingly innocuous disorders. I don't want that brought here. What's here is here we don't need anymore.

Maybe, I'll see you there. I'm waiting for Clydes though. Does the bar have martini's?

Umm ... Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Yes, I'm a geek.

Homer, wouldn't you like a place to go where your kids can just walk over to visit?

To get back on thread, I personally have no problem with the mental ward aspect of the hospital, I just don't understand the logic of having a hospital right here. They are building like crazy in Leesburg, I think Leesburg needs a hospital badly.

100 pts to you! I have no problem with mental wards. Just when they are right next to playgrounds. Does Child Molester count as a mental problem?

I can not see child molesters in a low security mental ward of a community hospital. They are usually in jails or in high security mental hospitals, or live among us unknown. I do not see the mental ward as a big concern about the hospital. We are not talking about putting a hospital here for the Jeffrey Dahmers out there. It will be a ward for people with addiction problems, with eating disorders, with depression. I am not afraid of a hospital, not even in my backyard if it doesn't affect my home value. I am trying to figure out what is the best for the county, and I don't see a hospital on Broadlands Blvd. as best for the county. Because if what happens is what is best for the county, it will be the best thing for us as home owners in the long run.

You're probably right, we dont need any more competition for the title of "town loonie."

Curious...how did you make the connection from hospital to child molester? I can appreciate the mental defence as a strategy, but even in those cases, they are sent to wards that specialize in sexual offender treatments (based on my experience working at residential psych hospitals). I believe that Cliff had made mention earlier to studies by law enforcement about the statistical liklihood of crime increases where a hospital exists...was there something in there to indicate sexual offences? And I think you can get martini's just about everywhere that has a liquor license, but since the pub is not open yet, we'll just have to see. I'm more of a wiskey person myself though - the glasses are less top heavy.

It's a mental illness right? Or how about Arsonist (Firebug, Pyro) or someone on Meth? If the mental ward was just going to be eating disorders and suicidal kids, no problem. Can you guarauntee that? If you can I'll fall in line.

I do like a nice Rare Breed Wild Turkey and Coke. I thought the pub was open, when does it?

Well, I think Sexual Offense is a crime, and not a catalogued mental disordered. However, it would not be unprecendented for a defence trial lawyer to go the mental disorder route (maybe suggest severe depression or some other psychosis that they managed to get a doctor to sign up for). The same might hold true for arsenist, rapist, peeping tom, murderer, or despondent child star actor turned quickie mart robber. Maybe its more relevent to fear the lawyers than the mental patients (no lawyers were harmed in the writing of this post) However, its probably inaccurate to say that mental patients are also criminals. Its also probably more accurate to say that most criminals walk free amounst us. I heard a statistic that for every sexual offence that is reported, the same offender has committed 10 others. I dont think anyone can guarantee that our neighborhood will ever be free from crime or danger, short of wrapping it up in a little biosphere-like bubble and shutting out the whole world. But then again, how do we know that those amonst us are not some deranged lunatic (re: the guy who mutilated his wife and threw her out for trash in S Riding), or a sleeping terrorist cell? Or how about the fact that we have serial bank robbers who have been cited as extremely dangerous and violent. Nobody seemed to care that a bank in our community would attract bank robbers?

I think as best as we can get is the promise we make to each other, as a community, to be good to each other and look out for one another.

I think Marie is the resident expert on when our little pub opens. Any update...has the libations began flowing?

Ah, you didn't answer me. You sidestepped. Arsonists have a mental disorder it just happens to be criminal. Same with Sex offenders. Would these people not be treated at the hospital? Wont these people who used to use the hospital in Alexandria have to come here. So what if the firebug lights a few fires in the nice forest we have. You may have not said the Hospital wont cater to these types but the HCA supporters have. And it's despicable that the HOA continues to use the newsletter as a propaganda tool despite the clear vote that the majority of residents who responded don't want it.

Well, lets be fair here: Arsonists CAN have a mental disorder. But Arson is a crime. And having a mental disorder is not. But not all Arsonists have a mental disorder. Some are just punks with poor parenting and good lawyers. Same with Sex offenders.

I havent seen any propoganda or prose to the effect of what doctors or specialities will exist at the hospital. If you have access to such info, feel free to share it. I am assuming that since it is a low security hospital, it will not cater to patients with criminal tendencies. They would go to a lock up facility, such as Potomac Ridge in Rockville. I also believe that where patients go has more to do with health insurance, treatment capabilities and referrals than with geography. So its probably not accurate to say that all Alexandria based patients would come here. There are more offerings in DC and Maryland anyway.

We also already have serial "firebugs" in Loudoun. We also have murderers, gangs, rapist and thieves. Preventing the arrival of a community service wont make all that go away. We shouldnt restrict ourselves of a needed service in spite of that. (I know some doubt the reality of "needed service", but by the time its a done deal, it probably will be needed here as well as many other local places - lets solve the real problem, lets stop building houses on every square inch of land we have left in this area and get an alternate source of revenue to the local gov'ts besides real estate taxes).

Gammonbabe reminds us of a very valid point- what will a hospital do to our property values? And I would like to add "what will it do to our quality of life?" I havent seen any documented facts from the anti-hospital faction about reduced home values or quality of life. And if some can be offered, I will certainly base my opinions on it. I hear a lot of passionate rhetoric, but see litte actual data, on either side.

Homer, I think your concerns are valid. I only hope that you can channel your energies into a productive and beneficial tool to our neighborhood. Have you considered getting involved in a neighborhood watch program or other safety programs (maybe organizing an effort to light the playgrounds better?)

Of course I've though about it. I'm my own neighborhood watch (do a search on drag racing). Bu tot be effective I'd have to quit my job to get anything done so when I retire look out. Anyway I'm channeling my anger against the toll road right now.

I never bought that prop values would decrease. I dont think QOL will go down anymore than as if a huge honking office building was there instead of a hospital. But I do think a hospital will bring in riff raff to an area they would have no reason to come to w/o it.

Just a question, why does the hospital need mental services? Are there not plenty of practicioners scattered throughout the area? Can't they be reffered to them if it's not serious? Also I don't agree, anyone who lights fire for enjoyment and not vandalism or mob type stuff is mentally ill, doubly so for molesters. 100% child molesters are mental, period. That's not normal.

Phew, am I glad that you are not an expert on that matter, or lawyers could pull this statement in to send all child molesters to mental institutions instead of to jail. They are much better off in jail, sharing their cell with big Bubba and lil' bubba.

Sorry, trying to interject some humor here (again).

Is anyone who commits a crime mentally ill, or is it just those that commit crimes against others (suggesting there are victimless crimes)? And is the opposite true...are all mental patients criminals? What is normal? (I read a bumper sticker that said normal is a clothes dryer setting)

It seems that the hospital will offer a variety of services, not just mental health. And people will have a choice of where they go. But, some mental health treatment is tied to physical treatment. Having a hospital without some form of mental health capabilities seems incomplete in my opinion. You wouldnt expect a hospital to have an ER but no Radiology dept. Why is it acceptable to dismiss mental health? (reminder, I already suggested that mental health is physical health of the brain - not just brainwashing)

Wait a minute...are you the guy thats been drag racing around here? We should put a stop to that. :)

    So what's more likely:

The possibility that mental patients from an as of yet unbuilt hospital will run rampant in the community?

The possibility that office workers from a potential office complex will drive themselves to happy hour at Clyde's (or either of the neighborhood pubs) and then drive themselves home, drunk?
