I got the email and a phone call. I assume a rumor was started and they wanted to let the parents know before they panicked started coming to the school.

    Here is the text:

    BRIAR WOODS HIGH SCHOOL 0420
    Message sent - 10/6/2008
    Rumor Untrue at Briar Woods

This is Mike Byers, the assistant principal at Briar Woods High School. There is a rumor that there has been violence threatened at Briar Woods today. Briar Woods is safe and the Sheriff’s Office is on scene to make sure it remains secure. School is proceeding as normal and there is no need to come to the school.

Anyone know what the rumor was?

    So what exactly is "untrue"

Is the rumour of violence untrue
Or are they saying there there WAS a threat but it is being handled?

I don't know what the issue was/is, but I do know that when I dropped my daughter off this morning, there were two marked and one unmarked cruisers in front of the school. The usually have only the one marked cruiser.

Well, all I can tell you is I just got a call from a very upset KaosGirl asking to be yanked out of school ASAP.

    Brassy is investigating.

Let's hope this issue will be handled. It is a shame that there are even threats of violence in our schools :angryfire:

I called the school. A student was suspended on Friday and threatened to bring a gun to school. He or she is now in police custody.

KaosGirl is safe at home. In these kinds of situations there will be a few variations on the story. KaosGirl's version is this: It was the same group of kids that caused problems at The Battle of the Bands. She says that Kid A's cousin was suspended (or expelled) - date unknown. So, Kid A showed up today threatening to ":censored: some :censored: up!" and claimed to have a gun. Folks freaked when, after 2nd period, he went missing.

She also reports a fight this past Friday after school. :shakehead:

I've met a few of the staff over there and they are very concientious professionals. There will be shouts about how the school can do better when it's the Parents of these n'ere-do-wells who could be doing better!!!

Don't be silly. Holding the parents accountable? Not in this country! Next thing you will say is that parents need to be responsible or something. Sheeesh.

I think that solely blaming the parents is like saying "Well I didn't start that forest fire. Why should I put it out?".
Well, because it might just burn down your house.
I hope everyone is alright. The school (and hopefully parents) definitely needs to get involved in mediating and making these kids squash their disagreements and deal with their own emotions in a rational way. I wonder how much focus is put on team-building/bonding in high school.
BTW we are definitely hiring security for the BOTB next year (if we have it at all).

It's a good thing I didn't know what the rumor was, or my son would have been yanked also!! Good for the staff for handling this situation well and not making light of it. This is scary stuff.

I'm confused. I called Briar Woods this morning after recieving a text from my daughters. The school told me it was all a rumor. Apparently, it wasn't.
