Even if they add the food tax, they'll still raise our property taxes. The county hasn't figured out yet how to cut the budget when times are tight....

Yes, that is the problem I see. Times are tight, so instead of trying to meet a budget that we cannot afford anymore in Loudoun county we should look for places to cut the budget. It's not fun to cut spending, nobody likes doing it, but right now it is necessary. Right now we have a budget shortfall, so lets cut spending and when the economy get's back on track and the tax incomes go up, there will be more money again to spend.

Also, looking for other ways to add to the budget than creating new taxes may be an option that citizens and businesses can deal with much better. Once a tax is levied it will stay around, a one-time charge to support one specific infrastructure item for example may be much more palatable.

    Just one idea.

I agree 100%. It was way over priced and the atmosphere too stuffy for the food they were putting out.

    Joy,
I believe Dulles Airport is also in Fairfax County. (Cliff can probably answer correctly) So, the tax may only be on food at the main terminal and not the other terminals.

The main terminal and I believe A & B are entirely in Loudoun. Jufging by the county line, D looks to be in Loudoun and C may be in Fairfax. Udvar-Hazy is certainly in Fairfax.

Dulles International Airport is located partially in Dulles, Virginia, which is an unincorporated census area in Loudoun County and partially in Chantilly, Virginia in Fairfax County.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, Virginia in Fairfax County

    Meal Tax

Accordingly, prepared meals at the grocery store will be taxed too not just restaurants.

Broadlanders, how do you feel about this meal tax for funding our schools?

    Quoted from the article.

"Revenue would be used to pay down debt from past school construction or pay for new construction. "

This is pretty big spread of mission scope. :nono:

I would approve of the meal tax if it were used solely to pay down past debt.

However, I am not in favour of the meal tax if it is going to be used for new construction.

    Re: Meal Tax

My first though is that I am against it. If I truly believed this tax was necessary for school funding then I would think otherwise. If I also could buy the "well at least this will help from increasing property tax" story then maybe I'd be for it for that reason as well. However the way I see it is the county leaders have gotten themselves into a huge budget shortfall and they desperately need more revenue. Granted schools are part of what is at risk, but I think they are painting it as primarily a school issue mainly to tap into the emotional level where people will ultimately vote for education when the real reason is the county can't seem to live within a budget or trim anything when times are tight. This tax will barely make a dent in the shortfall (13M of 176M) and there is no way property taxes won't still go up as a result. From what I see, when property tax increases are needed, the county raises the percentage right up to the level before all out revolt. Maybe a little exaggeration here, but my point being that property taxes are going to go up and I'm betting to the same degree regardless of this meals tax. The county needs to be told "NO" and be forced to live within their means. Another tax won't fix anything.

Some times the toughest thing a politican has to do is say "no" when additional spending, not matter how noble the cause, is proposed.

However, we elect politicans to do just this -- make the hard and sometimes unpopular decisions.

GeauxTigers, I think you are right about the emotional manipulation.

We just sent our absentee ballots in (we'll be on vacation out of state) and it is on the ballot. So, those who aren't sure what the tax means, need to research it because the choice will be made in a few weeks.

I am looking on the State Election site

    http://www.sbe.virginia.gov

and I can't find the exact wording for this tax issue. Has anyone else found the official wording for this issue?

I can't form an opinion until I see exactly what is being proposed and the wording used.

    Found a copy at

    http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=1726

Question: Shall Loudoun County, Virginia, be authorized to levy a tax,
pursuant to Virginia Code Section 58.1-3833(A), on food and beverages sold for human consumption by restaurants and on prepared foods sold ready for human consumption by grocery stores and convenience stores, in an amount not to exceed 4% of the amount charged for such food and beverages, to be used exclusively for school construction projects and school construction debt service?

So it still has both the new construction and debt repayment wording. I don't like that. :( To me, the two should be separate issues.

    Fact sheet on the tax

To jump a bit back on topic. It is a shame that Cafe Panache closed. I only went there once on the recommendation of the owner of the restaurant I work at for a second job in the Broadlands but it was definitely very nice... if a bit expensive for my tastes.

The owner of Panache seemed like a great guy. He struck up a conversation with me and then bought myself and my girlfriend dessert on the house.

Not a surprise. We dined their once and never again. The food was ok, the prices were high, and the ambience just didn't cut it in terms of the marketing they put around it.

They should have established a market niche and stuck with it.
