What is this commute like? I am considering applying for a job in Laurel, MD but I think the commute might be a bit extreme.

I did this commute a few years ago. It wasn't TOO bad -- maybe 60 to 75 minutes each way, if you left Ashburn before 7 and didn't hit any accidents, weather, or sun delays. But I think traffic has increased, so I think it's a bit longer.

I currently drive from Broadlands to the north east corner of Silver Spring. I imagine Laurel will be about 5-10 mins further. This is my experience based on one week of commuting.

I avoid the Greenway, and take 28 to the toll road to the beltway. As long as you leave just prior to 7 AM the drive isnt too bad. The most unpredictable section is the Toll Road - especially when the sun is up and in your eye. The beltway is actually pretty decent. It takes me anywhere between an hour to hour and 15.

On the way back, I've been consistently clocking an hour and 20 (give or take a few) - the slow down spots being the beltway after the 270 merge towards the toll road exit, and the toll road the first 10 - 15 miles from the toll booths. I leave work around 4:50 or so, and am generally home latest by about 6:20 PM.

If you have some time to decide - I'd recommend tracking traffic behavior on Traffic.com for about a week specifically around the times of your commute. I have set up alerts for myself and I've found it to be pretty accurate at telling me where the slow spots are.

    Hope this helps.
