My neighbors cats keep pissing on our deck. One of them just sprayed all over my grill cover and on the composite decking. I tried to scare it away, but it just looked at me like it owned my deck. Anyone know how to get rid of the cats or at least get them to stop pissing on my deck?

Eeewww! They are being territorial by marking your deck. Do you have any pets in the house that they see through the window? A cat that practices that behavior will not be detered. Usually (but not always), cats that "spray" are not neutered and both males and females can exhibit this behavior if not controlled behaviorally. If they mark outdoors then they are, more than likely, marking indoors. Speak to your neighbor and quickly as warm weather will enhance the foul odor and make the deck unbearable.

After you hose down the sprayed areas and it dries, try spraying a product called feliway. It's a feline facial pheronome that is pleasing to cats and stops them from spraying that area. Ask your neighbor if they have feliway as it is rather expensive. Then get a sprayer and fill it with water and when you see them come around shoot the water at the cat. Make the area unpleasant for them to visit.

If none of the above helps and as the last alternative, tell your neighbor you will trap them and take them to the animal shelter.

    How many cats are there?

I'd talk to the neighbor diplomatically about this and if he/she blows you off or asks you to "prove" it, take a picture of the cat...then if he/she disputes it, then talk to the animal control folks about it. Its clearly a violation of ordinance to have pets wander unleashed, I believe. Good luck!

What does said cat look like? (Hoping it's not mine . . . he's neutered and I've never seen him spray. . . )

And a quick spray of water will get rid of any cat I've ever seen. But of course, if you're not there when it happens, that's a different story. And not a nice story, at that.

1 Orange (named JoJo) and 1 black and white (named Minnie)

The owners live next door. The cats seem to just exist outside.

Thanks for the advice from previous posters. I plan to try some of the suggestions.

Neutered cats will still spray. It's rare, but they do. Sadly, I had a sofa that learned that the hard way. :(

Well, I'll be darned. Looks like they couldn't care less if the cats are wandering around because cats can scratch other kids/people as much as dogs can bite them. Wonder what the county's rationale was for not insisting that cats be leashed if they go out on their own? Interesting tidbit.

    Thanks Linux-

how many aggressive cats do you know that actually pursue or chase someone down?

leashes don't stop dog bites - if they wanted that - they're require muzzles. Leashes keep a dog's range under the owner's control (or at least attempt to).

There apparently is less concern over the need to keep control over a cat.

My recollection is that the HOA rules were that no cats can be loose outdoors, and was not a county ordinance. This may have changed since we moved in a long time ago but I suggest you check your rules book, or someone from the board could respond to this to clarify.

I am on the HOA Board and have been living here since 1999. I have NEVER seen such a rule in the Broadlands by-laws.

The Declaration For Broadlands, Article 8, Section q discusses animals. As it relates to this discussion, Pets (including cats) are not permitted on the Common Area unless under the Owner's control.
It further states that the Board of Directors can have a pet removed from the Property (which includes Common Area and individual homeowner's lots). A pet "causing or creating a nuisance or unreasonable disturbance or noise may be permanently removed from the Property upon ten days written notice from the Board of Directors."
