Last night I stopped in Safeway to get a bottle of Excedrin. Got home and noticed the the expiration date was 03/04!! This was THREE months ago! I ALWAYS check dates on dairy products, meats, etc but never even thought to check the excedrin. Grrrr!! I sent a comment in on the Safeway website and I'll be returning the excedrin today. Needless to say, I still have my headache. [xx(]

    Make sure you check EVERYTHING!

Interesting. I bought an item from their organic section that had expired as well. I have the receipt and just havent been able to go return it but it expired 05/04 and I bought it the 1st week of June. Sounds like this Safeway needs some work!

We do not go there anymore for that specific reason. We have bought milk there 2x that was spoiled and rotten. Obviously they were past their expiration date as well. This is probably the worse safeway I have ever seen.
When I saw the title of the post I knew EXACTLY what it was about....LOL!
I think the problem they have is not enough customers and to cut costs they just leave the expired stuff out and hope people buy it and dont come back to return it......pretty bad management. Dont think they'll last too much longer at this rate.

I had the same problem. I discovered on several occasions expired food products... and that was in the butcher department!

Good luck getting any response from corporate Safeway. I sent them a comment/ complaint in February and am still awaiting a response. Worst Safeway ever...

I have almost purchased expired turkey sausage and expired tofu. I alerted someone each time and they quickly went to take care of it.
It's too bad that we have all had the same problem there. They are sooo convenient- wish they were up to the job!

Seems to me Broadlands Safeway doesn't have enough customers to turn over their inventory. I'm not a Safeway shopper but is that place ever busy like Giant or Wegamans?

I wish Broadlands the best but there seems to be a glut of grocery stores in Ashburn. I believe there are 6 and rumors of another coming.

What (besides the expired items) makes it "the worst Safeway ever"? I'm curious why noone shops there. Is it just the high prices?

I will elaborate on my "worst Safeway ever" comment. I will start by saying that I am pretty laid back. I don't give a whole lot of thought either way to my grocery store. However, I have had problems in the pharmacy, bakery and general merchandise, so stay away from Safeway as much as possible.

    Pharmacy:

Went to fill an antibiotic prescription for my son. The prescription was for 14 days, but the stuff only stays good for 10. Safeway pharmacy filled it as 2 separate prescriptions, requiring 2 full co-pays. Giant normally just gives me 10 days worth, then has me come back to pick up the last 4 days (no additional cost, it's still the same prescription). I asked Safeway why I had to pay twice and was told that it was their policy. I had to get their district manager involved. My insurance told me that it's up to the pharmacy how they want to handle the situation, but it would be possible for me not to have to pay twice depending on how the pharmacy put it in the computer. When I finally got my refund of my second co-pay I asked how similar situations were going to be handled in the future. I was told it would be "case by case", meaning I would have to fight every time. Giant pharmacy takes longer-lots of customers and lines, but worth it for me.

    Bakery:

Ordered my sons cake 48 hours before the party (they only require 24 hours). Went to pick it up 2 hours before party, they said that they had baked the cake, but had not decorated it yet because they were out of the theme. They said they had tried to call (I have an answering machine). They told me to see if there was an alternative theme I wanted to pick from the book. I must have given them 4 or 5 alternatives, they were out of all of them. I finally had to ask them what they DID have. I ended up with fish, only because I didn't have the time to risk running to Giant to see their selection. They were nice enough to knock off $2 (whoop de do). I did stop by the front desk to complain, and the manager refunded my money. To add insult to injury, it wasn't even the cake I'd ordered. I guess that's par for course. Oh, when I got home after the part, there was a message on my machine from the bakery, 15 minutes AFTER I'd been there...

    General:

I have experienced the past expiration dates-lots of their meats are that way. I have also been overcharged (things showing on sale in the aisle, then full priced when you check out). Overall, it's a very shoddy, disappointing experience.

I grew up with Safeway and was really excited when I found out one was going here. It's just the worst grocery store I've ever been in. Maybe it's so dead because other people have had the same luck as I have had there. Just a thought.

I think a big part of the problem is the staff. Most are union and don't really try to do anything very well. I used to get the sandwiches from the deli but it always seemed to put them out and take forever. I just go to Wegmanns now.

My favorite experience was when I tried to write a check and for some reason the cashier got an error (no, i wasn't overdrawn on my account-and I didn't know what the problem was at the time) and she didn't say ONE word to me, just left the register to presumably look for the manager. There were people in line behind me. She walked the whole store, went outside, disappeared for at least 10 minutes while I'm standing there wondering what just happened. The manager showed up (other register workers noticed us standing there & kept trying to call the mgr - who was in the bakery & "really busy" cause there was no bakery worker that night) and the register stayed missing for at least 5 more minutes. No one ever told me what the issue was and I was too PO'd and annoyed to ask. I'll just use my card there from now on or try Wegman's again:) I loved the Safeway in Sterling for cost savings & cleanliness but so far I'm not impressed w/the Broadlands one except for convenience.

It's never busy and it's a Harris Teeter being built in Belmont. I think that Safeway is going to go down eventually. I notice that the gas station hasn't been put in yet. I wonder if it ever will?

I can't wait for Harris Teeter. I wish they had built in the Broadlands and not the Safeway.

Has anyone ever put in a formal complaint with Safeway through their website? My wife did and we got a response from the regional folks less than 24 hours later stating that they would personally take care of the issue. She also complained directly with the store manager who promptly called the person responsible for that area of the store and instructed her to resolve the issue immediately. This was in regards to expired medication in the pharmacy area. The woman that got yelled at was none too happy that the manager was having her check all the stock on the aisles immediately. Makes me wonder though; what kind of people simply don't care about selling expired medication?

If enough of us complain, rest assured that things will change. There are so many 'alternatives' in regards to grocery stores around us and in order for this Safeway to remain competitive, they will have to mend their ways. It's a very competitive industry and the regional folks are never too happy when they get bombarded with complaints about a store with shoddy processes...

My wife and I were in there last nite and checked out at about 8:45p. The girl bagging our groceries rolled our eyes and said, 'You sure got a lot of stuff...I get off in 15 minutes.' Sure, we may have had a lot but since when does it take 15min to bag any order? To be fair, I think this girl may have been 'developmentaly challenged' (I believe thats the PC term these days...). Anyhow, I'm not too fond of going there, but it sure is convenient.

I don't see anything wrong with the post. In fact I agree. Most of the staff are the dregs of the work force. I talked to one whom said she tried to get a job at Wegmanns but was rejected b/c Wegmann's standards are to high. The only non-manager folks over there who do a decent job are the non-native born Americans. It's another example of the working class work ethic disappearing.

When I worked at Kings Dominion or slinging plates at the Dietrick Dining Hall for $3.25 an hour I did my job and I did it well. Of course I wasn't union....

Yah, nothing wrong with my post...I even used PC terminology. Seriously, I think she had some problems...I'm not making light of it.

Lol! If they look at this thread they're gonna get an eye opener on why the Safeway isn't doing so well. I feel sorry for the manager of that safeway.
