I forgot about the prescription-filling issue that was mentioned earlier in this thread, and so I brought a 3-month prescription in for filling at Safeway. Oops. If I sent it to my mail-order pharmacy I'd pay $20 and they'd fill the full 3 months at once. At Safeway I have to pay $20 each month so I'll end up paying three times what I'd have paid for mail-order. This policy must have a negative impact on the pharmacy's bottom line. Is Safeway considering changing it?

BTW, every time I've been in Safeway I've met cheerful, happy, productive employees - all of whom say hello with a smile. I've never had a bad experience there. I usually shop there early in the morning.

Currently we do have home delivery in some markets. I believe the plan is to roll this out to all our marketing areas at some point in time when the market will support it. We did have home delivery some time ago, but there was not enough interest at that time from consumers in this area.

Encouraged by the Safeway Management involvement and concern, I went to Safeway yesterday (July 2). Upon preparing dinner, my steak rolls were old and not fresh at all, and the clincher was a small water melon I bought. It had a label on it, and I removed the label to see that it covered a moldy hole. I was grossed out of course, and not happy. It was obviously very deceptive and I don't like that at all. I will be taking both back today and asking for my money back and no replacements. I think I will be patroning Giant until some of these issues are resolved.

Frankly, I'm very disappointed to hear of the problems with produce and perishables at the Safeway. I'm seriously thinking of filling out an employment form for part-time work as a produce or dairy clerk in order to get some of these issues resolved personally.

I was a produce clerk, then a dairy manager before I went into the Air Force in 1971. It does take some effort to ensure that product is properly rotated, shelves and display cases clean and fresh, and that product is displayed properly.

I'm willing to work a 5 to 9 shift in the morning for a while .. my business is such I can schedule appointments from 10 am on !!

BTW ... I was getting journeyman scale when I worked part-time for Alpha Beta in Las Vegas back in the late 70's early 80's.

Just got back from Safeway to buy a gallon of milk and a couple other things. Beside the gallon of milk I picked out, which had a "Sell By Date" of July 17th, there were two other rows of jugs. One of them had "Sell By July 3rd" and the other hade "Sell By July 4th."

This was at 6:30pm, on July 5th.

Since the gallon I bought had July 17th, and the gallon(s) beside it said July 3rd and 4th, I can only assume that the old gallons there were about 2 weeks old (July 3 + 14 days = July 17).

SafewayDM; doesn't look like our comments to you are leading to much. Especially for something as 'mainstream' as a gallon of milk...

Neilz - this is not about you as I agree with your post.

Admins - I have had a few posts in the past where I used special characters to "mask" curse words and those posts were edited rather quickly. Here is post that has been around for a while yet no action has been taken. Thank you

I could be wrong here, but I think the "sell by dates" are dates that are recommended to have the perishable sold by. It should still be "good" for about another 4-7 days afterwards. But you are right, if it is "past" the sell by date, that perishable should be removed, eventhough it is probably still good (assuming adequate refrigeration). I personally will not buy a perishable that has a sell by date within 2-3 days of the current date. Only because I go through my perishables so slowly, it would take me out of that safe zone of 4-7 days. Keep in mind that some grocery chains and small shop marts/circle Ks/ 7-11s have wiped off the "sell by date" and replaced it with a more up to-date "sell by date" to avoid having to replace the actual product.....:) Ummmm, yummy......:D
I happened to take a big swig of a glass of milk, which had expired (obviously) way before the date on the side showed. Took forever to get that taste out of my mouth. Oh, BTW, I bought that milk at that circle K on Truro Parish....:), never been back, not even for gas.

T8erman, the forum software takes care of 'masking' certain curse words that we have set automatically.

If you have issues with this policy or with something in particular, please take it up in a different thread or email us directly.

Has anyone had any problems with Giant and out of date products?

I always check the sell by date every time I buy something because I want the freshest item - I've found out of date items in all of the area supermarkets...yes including Wegmans.

I haven't had any problems at Giant or Wegmans. When we first moved here the only grocery stores we had were the Giant in the Village, Food Lion & Super Fresh. I had numerous problems at Super Fresh. Perhaps that's part of the reason they were replaced with Shoppers.

Funny you should mention the milk you purchased at Circle K - we bought some at the same place and it made my daughter sick. We know have to taste and smell all milk we open new from anywhere before giving it to her. I guess we should have done that in the first place but hindsight is everything. Needless to say we do not buy a quick we are out of milk at Circle K anymore.

Well Safeway struck again...I sent my husband out last night to pick up a few things and the vegetables he brought back were pitiful. According to him, they were the best of the selection. I guess we are going to go back to patronizing Giant.

I just went in there today. The staff seems a little more friendly but it doesn't seem like the there has been much improvement in produce. :(

Even the bread might be questionable. The first loaf I pulled this afternoon did not have a date printed on the tag. The loaf behind it had a different colored tag with a date. Tag switcheroo or just a fluke? Kinda makes you Wonder (pun intended) about the entire operation.

I recently bought a block of white cheddar cheese from Safeway. I opened the package the day that it was purchased and it was covered with mold. YUCK!!

I got a cream cheese package (the ones you get at the bakery). Still had 10 days before the expiration date.. was sealed.. yet was covered in green mold inside.

Sounds like Safeway is having packaging problems :(

Plus their prices continue to spiral up. It used to be Giant was expensive, but Safeway here is definatly 10%+ more.

Sodas have gone from 1.29 each off sale to 1.39 or 1.49 for a two liter. As an example.. bread from 1.69 a loaf to 1.99, etc.

I'm honestly thinking about buying dry goods from Target, etc. The traditional grocery store prices are driving me mad.
