Thank you for the clarification, redon1. I think that we should all be very appreciative of the fact that tiff78 made us aware of the state's child abuse and neglect citations against this facility. After reading the post, I sent emails to all of our neighbors about it.

    Tiff

I feel so bad for you because everyone seemed to come down on you when you posted the allegations against Kindercare Broadlands back in Febuary.

    Enlight of http://www.nbc4.com/news/16164058/detail.html
    and
    http://loudounextra.washingtonpost.com/news/2008/may/05/daycare-workers-charged-not-reporting-abuse/

i'm just curious how everyone opinion has changed on the subject,
Good for you Tiff for being a proactive parent in the community and posting information - (sad how most of the posts on here just turn the other way, much like KinderCare Management and Director did).

    Kudos to you Tiff.

Sad that children were in harms way. And the members of this community instead of being outraged - chalked it down to the 'wording' in the Social Services report. Which seemed pretty clear to me that children were not being treated inappropriately.

    Mine opinion hasn't changed.

A teacher shook a child (yes, bad), the teacher was fired (yes, good), management tried (?) to protect daycare (wrong choice but understandable). In the eyes of the law, this is pretty minor.

Worse things happen at some peoples houses every day! Do you or someone you know yell at children or spank your children? Is it only "abuse" when someone else does it to a child other than the parent?

I would bet my house that 100% who post here have "abused or neglected" their children BASED on the strict guidelines that daycares follow?

And where was your "outrage" back when this was originally posted?

That's the thing, the daycares are held to a standard which they must adhere to, regardless of what you think abuse is. It's about adhering to the law and they didn't. Would you like an incident that your child was involved in to not be reported to you? Or, with your logic, you should let the management determine whether to tell you or not? I don't think so.

I agree that daycares should be held to exacting standards (I am fairly involved and my wife is the daycare board president for our son's daycare). But I am not going to cry OUTRAGE when almost all of the "abuse and neglect" that is reported "probably" occurs in the childs home too. And before others chime in, I said that the shaking of a child was bad.

And I NEVER said incidents should not be reported. Re-read where I sais they made a "wrong choice). Maybe that is your logic trying to read into my post what is not there. ;)

I see your argument about what is considered "abuse", and I agree that a lot of it (if you yell at your kids or hold them firmly/spank or something like that) occurs in the home all the time, but when it comes to a company watching kids, it's different.
People should hold the company responsible and be offended/outraged/whatever if they step outside the law.

It is understandable that management would try to protect their arses and the companies.

My Outrage? I am one of the people who contact Susan Smith the Social Services advocate who was investigating the case back in DECEMBER when original allegations were presented to the Management of Kindercare Broadlands. - So just because you see it on the news now, this issue has been going on for months without public knowledge.

That is why i say KUDOS to Tiff for researching and staying on top of the events in her/his community.

And i am sorry. Parents are paying over 300 dollars a week to put these kids into a center where they blindly trust "qualified" employees to care for their children - not lay their hands on them.

A company ESPECIALLY a childcare facility should not care about "protecting their arses" they should be concerned with PROTECTING THE CHILDREN. Would u make such a ridiculous statement if instead of "abuse" it was "sexual abuse" no. Abuse is Abuse shaking a toddler or smacking kids around is WRONG period, and ignoring it and not contacting authorities is WRONG as well.

if you think there is something right about Million Dollar KinderCare Corporate trying to COVER UP a situation in one of their centers ...and then brush it off like "oh well i yell at my children at home.".... im worried for the children in your own care.

hey now - let's take a deep breathe - there is no need for such a nasty personal attack about how T8er is as a father. I know this is an emotionally charged subject - but let's try and be nice.

For the record he is a wonderful person and a great father.

Back to the topic - we had planned to put out little pea into this center - even gave them a deposit (b/c we were adopting and didn't have an exact date) - but (thanks to Tif's) post we had second thoughts. I've met w/ the new director Carrie Anne several times and when I am are ready our little pea will go to that center (if Carrie Anne is still there).

    WOW! Where to start...

My gut instinct tells me you are a FORMER employee of KinderCare. However, thank you for escalating the abuse issues.

As for Tiff, I will say "thank you" for being a concerned parent.

As for your labeling the entire industry, it is a VERY small percentage of "qualified workers" who shouldn't be providing daycare.

As for "companies", ALL of them pretty much worry about the bottom dollar! Do you really think that just because KinderCare is a child-based business that $$$ is not the most important reason to be in business?

What ridiculous statement did I make? I make so many. Was it that managers and companies try to watch out for themselves?!?! You are right, that is SHOCKINGLY ridiculous (excuse me, I need to wipe the sarcasm sweat from my face). Was it that most of the abuse that occurs at a daycare also occurs at home? What is ridiculous about THE TRUTH?

And AGAIN, I NEVER said what the managers and KinderCare did was RIGHT, I said I could understand their possible motives.

As for my child, worry all you want. I am confident in my parenting and sleep very well at night.

    T8erman,

I think what gets me is your usage of the word "understand".

You said "It is understandable that management would try to protect their arses and the companies."

I'm reading that as though you are using the word 'understand' to mean: "To know and be tolerant or sympathetic toward" example - "I can understand your point of view even though I disagree with it."

or the meaning of 'understandable' - "Expected or accepted under the circumstances" example - "Their anger is understandable, given what happened."

I don't believe what happened should be tolerated or accepted. But this is my opinion and of course you are entitled to yours.

If anyone is interested, our forums had another thread which discussed this incident, as well as the person in charge of the center, etc...

    http://www.broadlandshoa.org/hoaforum/showthread.php?t=7526

Just trying to bring all the 'info' together so people have a good 'picture' of what was talked about here earlier in the year...

This is why I explicity stated it was WRONG.

    How's this -
ALTHOUGH WRONG, I can understand, reprehensible as it may be, why some in a management position at the daycare facility level and some at the corporate level would try to maliciously (;)) hide the ongoing abuse, and more specifically the dastardly shaking of a toddler. I can also understand, strictly from a monetary standpoint, that they may have been trying to potentially save their jobs and protect shareholders assets.

    Appeased?

I would like for everyone to know that this is actually a great center. My children have been going there for over a year and the teachers and staff are amazing. The management and staff have been completely overhauled since the time of this original post, and it saddens me that because of the title, this is the first impression prospective families receive today, several years after the fact. While I agree that this was indeed helpful during its time, it is now a damaging relic of the past that hurts a wonderful facility and innocent members of our own community. I would encourage Tiff to take a tour of the center and see for herself what a healthy place it has become, perhaps she would be willing to revise at least the title of her post so as to cease the destruction that is still being done to the people of this day care today.

This thread is more than 5 years old and the title is completely appropriate in that context for what it was. By resurrecting a thread this old, all you seem to have done is put this title back in everyone's face. This was a serious matter 5 and a half years ago so it should stand as a reminder to that incident (my opinion).

The administrator may offer another solution and perhaps clarify how long threads remain available...
