As you clear your driveway and sidewalks, make sure your nearby fire hydrant is also cleared of snow.

Don't forget to clear your nearby fire hydrant of snow. After the last snowfall, I noticed many hydrants were left untouched. A few minutes now can make a big difference later.

And, if you hadn't changed the batteries in your smoke alarms in a while, now if a good time to do that, too.

I do, but the plow driver kept pushing it back and covering it. Finally had to yell at him to stop.

We have continued issues with the snowplow covering our fire hydrant, even AFTER we have dug it out. Contacting VDOT helps. They will send someone out to remedy it.

While the reminders are thoughtful, it would be helpful if the HOA established a concerted effort/relationship with whomever plows in our community. My husband's health was somewhat comprised last winter and he spent an entire day shoveling our drive and around the hydrant only for the plow to cover it again. There is no flag at the hydrant in front of our home to even identify its location.

So yes, I appreciate the reminder, but we are aware that the hydrant needs to be cleared. The REAL issue is that a corrective action plan should be in place to address the plowing process and strategy to ensure that hydrants are not covered by the plow trucks. My husband and I make several calls to VDOT regarding same each winter. :(

Our plow drivers have flagged the hydrants on HOA owned streets and will be digging them out.

Are we to contact VDOT to flag ours as they maintain our street? Please advise.

Just a thought... Perhaps instead of yelling at them, you asked them nicely and offered them something warm to drink(though they never take me up on it) they might be more likely to listen/help. Maybe even ask if there is a way you can help them mark the hydrant so they will remember to not cover it. Remember that these guys/gals will be working really long hours this weekend away from their families. A nice wave and thank you goes a long way... always worked for me... The plow driver even made an extra pass after to make sure my driveway entrance was clear.

I appreciate it the advice much of which we've tried. I've never yelled at anyone.

I am not sure if VDOT flags the hydrants on public roadways.

Every little bit counts. There are many hydrants that don't get the wrath of the plows.

The reminder is for people to contribute to the greater good and dig these out ourselves. VDOT doesn't mark them.. nor really make special attempts at them in the early rounds of plowing.
