If nothing else, having office buildings there should bring in more folks to patronize the restaurants at lunch. And of course, people who work there may want to live in the community and buy our houses when we move.

And when Broadlands was approved and they started building houses, you know, the ones we all live in, the existing residents in the area probably thought...DEVASTATING.
I actually watched them clear cut, strip, dynamite out, then backfill, the section of Broadlands where you live. Watching it was pretty cool. Some would say devastating, but watching these sequences of dynamite blowing up in an organized row was fascinating.

Progress, it was coming. Plus those trees just shed leaves everywhere.

I'm just speaking about my emotions. I hope it's okay to have them in the HOA Forums.

If this is something YOU truly find "devastating"..... move away.
    This is progress.
My mom sat at her bedroom window in 1943 and watched the Nazi's blow up her neighborhood in Rotterdam Holland.
"Devastating" is blood, dead bodies, and rubble for buildings and homes.
Personally, (and emotionally) I am all in for whatever they want to put there. Well, no strip clubs or casinos

Beautiful Godwin, comparing Broadlands to the Nazis. Because surely that's exactly what he said he supported, right?

    Loudoun uber alles.

Development happens naturally and we are all here because of development.

Being aware of how the development continues with many "re-zoning" is not being against development, but also knowing that the public has an option for an input. With that said, Ashburn area could have been developed better - and I think that it is not hard to see how housing growth did not match with the planning of roads, schools' crowding and walkability. It is also sad to see many of the strip malls suffering, as more of them being built.

Don't know exactly who is responsible, but it could have been done better, and it should get better going forward. I personally realized that we do complain about these projects after they are approved, but say nothing or so little during the approval process because we are all very busy, and the worse part is that these can be very difficult to understand.

So we are all in this together - and I hope we can pay a little more attention and speak up when the time is right to make the growth be better for everyone. I wish that the Loudoun would implement Smart Growth principals - if not now - Loudoun will have to go back and retrofit in 20 years. I suggest they save time and money to catch up with Arlington and maintain the economy as well as protecting the environment.

[sarc]Thanks everyone for redefining how I experience the very negative change in a natural area that I embrace more than any other. [/sarc]
I really get that the scope of the devastation that I feel is less than, oh let's say, one of my best friends who watched his parents, aunts and uncles all executed in Cambodia in 1975. He was imprisoned and tortured at 7 years old. Then he got on a raft and saw 15 of the 28 people die. But guess what? He isn't devastated. He is one of the most positive and inspirational people I know.

But I am still really sad that the trees got ripped out of the ground and the place where I would go to frolic with my dog and kids will no longer be.

For those wondering what Van Metre's plans are for the property, they will be doing a presentation at the Annual Meeting next month.

Would have been nice if they held the meeting before plowing down 1000's of trees and regrading the land. They took down trees and removed rock fences that predate the civil war.

Rock fence? Interesting- remember this- it's business as usual with VM.

Next, I wonder what's going on near Verizon as construction took down huge swath of trees on waxpool road.

Right. The plans may have been on paper for years but they fell the trees and want to have a kumbaya with the community well after the fact.

Furthermore, they cleared the trees in the middle of bird nesting season. I saw my first pair of magpie in this area and they were nesting in one of the trees originally left standing but two days later that tree was cut down. What was done to mitigate the impact on wildlife? Obviously nothing...

    Irresponsible.

Two issues with all of this.

    1) Isn't the market for commercial office space very soft right now? Take a drive around Northern Virginia and there are "Office Space for Lease" signs everywhere. This seems like a waste.

    2) Get ready for the summer of the snake. All this virgin soil perturbed will displace so many slithery creatures. Of course, not to mention the destruction of the habitat of so much more wildlife.

Is commercial clearing done in accordance with natural cycles like bird nesting, or is it done by when they have the money and resources? They may have this land cleared and not plan to build on it for months because they have the resources to do the clearing in advance of the actual building of anything. Sucks for the wildlife; especially in a Natural Wildlife Federation Community.
