I've been having a few hard drive problems lately. My laptop hard drive died, I lost 2 TIVO hard drives and 1 desk top hard drive. All within a year, that is odd. I've replace them all and the new hard drive in my desktop is starting to have problems again, it's reporting that "Drive C has an uncached speed of 2.89 megabytes per second." Systems with the same CPU and clock speed as this one have a speed of 10.94 MB/s. I updated the BIOS, could this have caused the problem? I am now back to the previous BIOS but still having the problems such as frequent crashing. I installed Intel Application Accelerator and when I get home this evening I'll run the Seagate diagnostic tools. The hard drive is just a few months old and has about 90% free space. Defrag and scan disk were run with no problems. Anything else I should try or any input on why I’m having so many hard drive problems? My "old faithful" dell has never had a problem in the 5 years I've had it.

You might be having some kind of interference that is causing the drives to go bad/perform poorly. Are they near unshielded speakers? Is there too much heat or frequent changes in temperature? All of these things can play a role.

Heat, power (brown outs), source of drive (poor packing of mail order OEM drives) are all things to consider. Make sure your TiVo isn't running hot as well. Two 7200 rpm drives in a TiVo can lead to early failure due to heat and low power. I just had one of two 160gb drive fail on my TiVo recently but I had some reservations when I installed it to begin with. The OEM drive was shipped to me in bubble-wrap packed in a box of peanuts. :(
